Hello My new music, still on a poem by my dear Jules Laforgue. So for voice (mine) and piano. In French with subtitles Still on the edge of tonal music. In the description of the video on Youtube, you can read a small note of intent that I wrote, which gives some keys to the black and sublime poetry of this young man, who died at the age of 27. (and whose cycle is his last). (And this time, thinking of you, I took care to leave the score roughly readable in the video editing)... Thank you for listening, Reviews and comments welcome!

It really is funny coming from “FILMSCORE” which film score composers (especially today) are notorious for producing a standard film sound, aka they all sound the same and lack in originality style and uniqueness. p.s. I may or may not write my own review of this masterpiece. Ultimately I love it, but it doesn’t mean I’m without criticism!

Hi - I've just joined the forum and set up my profile. I started composing last summer - unexpectedly, and with no musical training or theory (I can't really even read music....). But I've been very happy and grateful for what's come out of me since then. I've been pretty busy in that time, and am currently working on my 16th piece in about 9 months... This is a really lovely piece. I've listened several times and it has such a warm and deep quality to it. I would have thought more middle-eastern influence, so surprising to hear you're from India. But a great fusion piece all the same!! I agree with another person who commented about the reverb. This would be greatly improved by turning it right down.

Just a quick update ... I met with my mentor and got some feedback from my orchestra colleagues. Please note I will remove the percussion in measures 15 -23. as well as change the bass line rhythms. Also I will rework the transition measure 47. When done - I will upload the newer version with completed/corrected engravings (measure lines) as well. Looking forward to your comments. Mark

I didn't do a ton of mixing/mastering of the audio, more or less was focused on the music itself. If you get the chance to follow along, I'd like to hear your thoughts! As I was sure to have a melodic line through the piece, with some of those melodies briefly following the rhythm of the chord progression. I'm sure it would help if I went through to make those parts more pronounced. Thanks for your feedback on that. I'll be sure to make the audio reflect that, and make any changes in the score that might help with exaggerating the melodic lines Edit: I went back thru and listened with a clean slate, and could hear what you're saying. I did a bit poorly when marking dynamics for volume. The Melodic lines are blended with the harmonic lines. I've went through and either doubled / tripled up on the melodic voices, and adjusted dynamics. Going to update the post with that tonight. 🙂

Thanks Mark. The reference material I listened to, before composing this, was actually "Battle Beyond The Stars" (1980) and "Wrath Of Khan" (1982). My composition tutor also suggested reprising the theme at the end, or adding a snatch of theme as a coda (as they did in "Star Trek: Voyager").

HI Alex, I really didn't have any problem(s) with your lower voices. I really do like your theme ...it reminds a bit of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. My only suggestion, is I wonder, if you could incorporate the theme or segments of the theme in the ending. For me the ending loses a bit of energy. By doing so the arc of the work in my opinion will feel more complete. Mark It's a great movie if you haven't seen it!

Hi @UncleRed99! I just listened to this casually without looking at the score. For me, it seems to be good background music for some foreground film/media. As a piece of music it seems to lack a long leading melodic line. Often, I perceive it as just an orchestrated chord progression. I don't hear any themes, motives or melodies that stick in my memory and make me hum it after I've finished listening to it. Perhaps there's melodies here but I just didn't catch them? Or they're so few and far between and dissolved in the piece that they don't stimulate the listeners mind often enough to be noticed? Anyway, that's my perception of the piece. Thanks for sharing!

MuseScore doesn't need internet either! Unless you're using a third party sound library like I do. I pay for LABS sounds. They have an offline mode that works for 30 days at the time though, so can still go offline and use it on the go 🙂

The latest comment from the client is that this piece is too treble-heavy. So any ideas on how to enhance the bass-line would be very helpful. One thought I had was to just push up the faders on the low strings and low brass; but maybe that's a lazy solution! Also could duplicate the double-bass an octave lower on a bass synth, and add some parallel compression on the bass drum and tomtoms? After I'd written it, I noticed I've ended on a rather odd chord. It resembles E major, without the tonic, and with an added second. To me it sounds fine; but maybe I should change it? Here's an updated version of the work, with stereo-panning, and added counter-melody near the end. Hopefully an improvement?

Eh I would stick with musescore, it's pretty much the same but I'm just used to Sibelius. The experienced users of musescore seem to be able to create great mockups and scores, I wouldn't pay for something else. I do like the offline composing option, but other than that it's nothing different

Very nice music, you have a great voice :) As said earlier, a bit of variety or contrast would help, especially if you wanted to extend the material. Even if you took the melody and chords and gave space for just chords to break up the flow woukd be nice, wouldn't have to be something complicated. As is, it's wonderfully singable and stuck in my head already haha. Well done!
