  1. Well, I do think this is the most likely piece of mine to attempt to get published, so I do want to get it nearer to that status. So, I will be enlarging the instrumentation as I laid out earlier. The "solo" you speak of isn't really a Trumpet solo with the Oboe added over it. I wanted that specific effect of the Trumpet/Oboe together at that point. It's a quick and easy way to have an airy effect while still having a small piercing effect with the two. It should work for what I've used it for. Finale's GPO is more geared towards Orchestra instrumentation, and thankfully I've been able to use it somewhat to create a "decent" concert band setup. The glissandos are crap, because it's a straight glissando, which is only doable by a Trombone in reality. I could go back and, for an audio only score where I'm not using it for parts or a score, just for the audio, write in notes in small durations to make it sound "better". Can't take the place of human randomness though. The only reason I mentioned looking through what I could of Swearingen's pieces is that I had the same thought. "Dang, this sounds like something he'd write." So I went to look just to make certain I hadn't accidentally taken some melody or countermelody. Thankfully, I hadn't. And to be honest, there wasn't really that much thought. It just came out and I wrote it and then threw it onto the computer. It took less than 48 hours from start to finish, but that's what happens when an event resonates with you.

  2. I loved the melodies in this piece, and I thought you did an amazing job at setting up the mood, especially with the great tone and use of the marimbas. I have a two orchestration errors I'd like to point out. To start, the first clarinets will not be heard above everyone else, even without the trumpets and horns. Double that on another instrument. For the trumpet solo at C, have the bassoon part in the trombones, or euphonium or tuba - keep the whole brass feeling. Finally, the horn glissando at the end should go on alto sax as well to add power. Besides those small things, you need to state how many parts are on each staff on your score, I would have assumed you'd only have one trumpet based on the beginning among things. Also, state when each is to play by using 1, 2, a2, unison etc. Great work, 10/10

  3. Shush rob, don't turn this into an argument about rhetoric and semantics! I mean jesus, nevermind how correct you are, let's not talk about TERMINOLOGY!!!! Anything but THAT, RIGHT GUYS? GUYS??? Oh no, not this guy again. :< And FYI, all the diatonic scales I know are not well-formed at all! They're all uneven and scraggy, I wonder if we're talking about the same "diatonic scales!" Cuz golly gee that sure would be funny if there was a problem with the usage of our terminology! But that can't happen! Not on the internet! Much less on THIS forum. No sir. Read: Every day, same DAMN thing.

  4. Well, that sure beats the alternative... :ermm: Anyways, I think a good question is, how many people here actually DO plan their pieces out? I for one for one do not, I just write whatever feels natural as I progress.
