  1. Hello all! I would like to have a concert in 2012 October-November, which would be a solo cello concert. I will play pieces like Penderecki's Capriccio, and Ligeti Solo Sonata. On this concert, I would like to perform one of your pieces, so that's the reason for this competition. You can write for cello solo, or cello with electronic accompaniment (or other prerecorded staff). I prefer more xx. century or contemporary staff on this concert, so neo-classic and neo-romantic pieces won't be really accepted. The piece doesn't have to be new, but I like to be the world premiere cellist :) You have to send the (full) score to my e-mail --> gollam12@gmail.com I hope till June 1st everybody can do something for this small competition. Of course is somebody needs more time, it can be extended. Please write a comment, if you want to try this, so that I can see how many people will try. Also, if you have any questions, write it here, or write PM. Cheers, Marcell Magyari

  2. Can be longer too. I would like to perform it in the first part of the concert, before my piece titled Ego, which will be more than 30 minutes long for cello, piano, soprano recorder, percussions (all played by me) and prerecorded tape (on which I play too :D). (note, that I'm mainly a cellist and a composer!)

  3. None of the above. As with most things in life requiring skill, throwing more money at the problem will not solve it. Realistic orchestral mock-ups are not the product of who's got the best samples, but who knows how to use them properly. Which is a very small subset of the population using them, by the way. All of the above companies make excellent products. You can achieve great results with either of them, even better results with several in combination, and the very best results with a solid understanding of how to assemble a good mockup. The good news is that it's definitely possible, with today's technology, to create orchestral mock-ups that will convince all but the most discerning listeners. The bad news is that it takes years of practise in a number of skills that have nothing whatsoever to do with composition in order to get to the point where you can achieve that. So if I'm reading your question correctly, you were hoping someone would say "IT'S LIBRARY X!" and you'd say "THAT'S SWELL, MR. FRIENDLY!" and then toddle off to the retailer to buy the thing, and then you'd come home and plug it into your software and suddenly your work would sound realistic. Unfortunately, that's a dream that many folks have and we're not yet at the point where such a thing is possible, for any amount of money (unless you take the approach of paying someone else who's already got the samples and skills to do the mockups for you). If we knew a bit more about how you work and what your goals are, it would be far easier to give you a useful roadmap of possibilities for how you might go about achieving those goals, but given the nature of your question, all we can offer is a reality check and a query for more information — so how do you produce your music now? What is your goal? Timeframe? Budget?

  4. I draw inspiration from things....once, I was reading a book called "primitive mythology" by Joseph Campbell. He told the story of a story-teller whose stories were unusually powerful to all those who listened/ watched, to the point where he saved the King (takes place in "Napata", wherever that is) from a ritual regicide....that's a simplification of it, but.... It proved essential to finding some of the themes for the first movement of a piano sonata, which I wrote last summer. (I'm not the best/ most prolific composer). As I imagined the story in my mind's eye, it was accompanied by music, in a sort of cinematic way, as if it were an opera or ballet. Though that is how I view life, as a fundamentally cinematic experience. What otherwise inspires me to compose are my passion for unspeakable beauty and drama, especially the opulence of the natural world. I also like Naruto and Star wars....don't laugh. Since I'm not a very good drawer and don't like writing prose or poetry, music is the foremost avenue I have to channel what inspiration I have.

  5. But wait, with out this idea music is lame and abstract idea and boring. Ergo, we should not compose without being inspire by outside sources. everything and anything does and can do inspire us in music. @ Phil: I admire you sarcasm here. :)
