Now I realize you must have meant double stops… and, I'm gonna be honest with you, I don't think you're gonna get the sound you want. Organic development, form, and musical excitement were not the goals of this competition... meditation was. And, meditation is static, not dynamic. It is a stillness. While Austenite's piece demonstrated a kind of meditative state, it was a busy piece. Sojar, your opinions are welcome, but do not dishonor the host (me) by telling me I don't know what I'm talking about.1 point

Perfect! In addition, you can either have them play pizzicato (plucking the string) or arco (with the bow). Also, if you want the players to play several notes with a single bow movement (a legato effect), slur them together. Strings can also play staccato and spicatto (a kind of "jumpy" staccato). There are a lot of additional effects, but these are the most commonly found.1 point

I understand you are being playful here Austenite. But thinking more seriously about this, I don't think it's right to conceive of composition as truly a contest where one composer is expected to "beat" another. Each composer I think speaks and expresses their own individuality, their own mind and soul, which are expressed in their own style of composition. And so each composer's composition is valid in its own way, notwithstanding the technical superiority of some over others! So I think these competitions are useful as a way to exercise compositional skill and get feedback, to bend one's compositional talent according to certain competition rules and restrictions (such as the given theme, the time restriction, the instruments, etc). As such, the ratings and judgment would reflect (and should reflect) the composer's success in doing that and not necessarily one composer's "superiority" over the others. So, I think there is - and there should be - no question of being "beaten" by or "beating" anybody!!1 point

Hard to grasp these concepts are. Feel sometimes I that reading am I the posts of a great master... Jedi Master Yoda. On a serious note, I'd point out that "tragedy in music", rather than an advanced trait in a composer, is an effect of a composer being able to pour his life experiences into music with both skill and honesty. But a musician might as well to strip his music of emotional traits and write in an increasingly abstract fashion - which is not bad in itself, as long as he doesn't think himself as the only smart guy in the block just for doing this. Both are equally valid artistic statements, when done with integrity.1 point

None of the above. As with most things in life requiring skill, throwing more money at the problem will not solve it. Realistic orchestral mock-ups are not the product of who's got the best samples, but who knows how to use them properly. Which is a very small subset of the population using them, by the way. All of the above companies make excellent products. You can achieve great results with either of them, even better results with several in combination, and the very best results with a solid understanding of how to assemble a good mockup. The good news is that it's definitely possible, with today's technology, to create orchestral mock-ups that will convince all but the most discerning listeners. The bad news is that it takes years of practise in a number of skills that have nothing whatsoever to do with composition in order to get to the point where you can achieve that. So if I'm reading your question correctly, you were hoping someone would say "IT'S LIBRARY X!" and you'd say "THAT'S SWELL, MR. FRIENDLY!" and then toddle off to the retailer to buy the thing, and then you'd come home and plug it into your software and suddenly your work would sound realistic. Unfortunately, that's a dream that many folks have and we're not yet at the point where such a thing is possible, for any amount of money (unless you take the approach of paying someone else who's already got the samples and skills to do the mockups for you). If we knew a bit more about how you work and what your goals are, it would be far easier to give you a useful roadmap of possibilities for how you might go about achieving those goals, but given the nature of your question, all we can offer is a reality check and a query for more information — so how do you produce your music now? What is your goal? Timeframe? Budget?1 point
