  1. Hi everyone! This is my newest composition, and only my third, I wrote it for a competition, so I had a few friends record it with me. The quality i far from professional, but i'm open to all feedback and would really appreciate it!!

  2. Eleven Piano Variations on Elgar's Violoncello Concerto's First Movement's Theme.mp3 This is my 3rd set of variations for solo piano. I composed it as my entry in the YC Fall competition. The theme is Elgar's Violoncello Concerto's (Op. 95), first movement's first theme. I chose this theme because it was the first to come to my mind when I was thinking about what theme to choose. I chose it also because it is very memorable, reflective, and sad. I consider it to be one of the greatest themes ever composed. I chose the piano as the instrument to compose for, because Elgar had already done a great job with the violoncello and strings in the treatment of this theme. So I decided to take the opposite approach and treat it with a keyboard instrument instead. I also had composed two of my previous sets of variations for piano. So the piano was a natural choice. This is the link to the theme on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_Xg7JZcyIk&t=1m17s

  3. i like this, thank you for sharing. i felt the song could have been played with more emotion and fluidity. i listened to the violoncello version after listening to this and found the fluidity and emotion i was looking for. my critique has no theoretical basis and i am in no way knowledgable;; in fact, quite the contrary// blisses, bleum.

  4. Not necessarily. More like switching between two to in the melody (homophony). Maybe. I more meant that the dynamic contrast throughout the entire piece/song is a bit lacking.

  5. Hi, this is my first piece of hopefully many I'll be posting here! It's called "Imago" because an imago is the adult stage of an insect and the song reminds me of bugs in an enchanted forest with fairies and stuff. I don't really have a lot of knowledge about music theory, but please don't hold back on the feedback. All comments are welcome! Thanks!

  6. Some of your suspensions already have the resolved tone in them? Hard to go anywhere with that. Is the score not available? I don't think you need to be quite so programmatic with your writing. I'd like to see this move away from the tonic key a little more. Especially since "growth" is such a big thematic factor in this piece. Expand the range a bit! It's very sweet, and sounds playable but, without the score I can't be sure.

  7. Interesting work. I hear a really great opportunity to mix different tonalities in the piece. B major and B minor over an undefined bass would be cool. After the first bit, the rest was perhaps a bit too repetitive for me; I know there are bits of change, but it doesn't contribute to the overall tone of the piece. I agree with Lost in his assertion that the highs should have been higher and the lows lower. Dynamic contrasts are important.

  9. I like this. Not one of my preferred genres I admit but this is good I think. I always compare stuff to other forms of entertainment or literature to best describe my thoughts on something and this sounds like something out of a vampire movie. For my critique: I was actually waiting for more high points where it explodes into a world of ear catching bliss but perhaps I've been spoiled by orchestral music. For some reason I can't play the track past 1:00 so if there is a high point as I described I apologize, my connection is weak at the moment.
