  1. I really enjoyed it! The first theme especially that is really bright and forward-driven... At some places it does get a little messy, but maybe that's also because of the sibelius (I guess) sounds the playback uses... the score looks more organized... There is some great material in it. I would work on it more and give it a more coherent structure if I were you. :-)

  2. You are correct. Normally the introduction of the subject goes on for longer so the dominant answer can build on it, but I decided to be a little rebellious. :)

  3. For some reason, I got a Alan Hovhaness vibe from the "prelude" section....maybe that's just me.... The repeats in the prelude didn't bother me that much. I do think that in measure 13, instead of a direct repetition of the theme, maybe you can add some variation to it, like in the lower strings perhaps. The section around measure 29 was just gorgeous! Not an expert on fugues, so can't really comment the structure that much. One thing maybe you can help me with, or someone else can chime in: I thought the answer to the subject was suppose to be in the dominant key...your subject/answer seems to be all in D minor. Maybe I'm too focused on the traditional Baroque structure...?

  4. Hmm... I enjoyed the 1st half, the 2nd half was more messy, most after rehearsal G. This piece has a lot going for it, it has quirky melodies, energy...one important thing it lacks is focus. I think this piece deserves a more grand ending than the current one...it just feels too sudden and random. Orchestration is alright, though I'm concerned some of the wind solos will be drowned out easily. Also, you won't get much pitch from those high violin pizzicati, I think a better substitute would be bells...or harp doubling or something.

  5. I'm not sure... there are sets of variations where the original form is completely lost. I don't know, I see variations as a composing tool that may bring something totally different. Anyway, this Variations in E min sound nice !
