  1. Hi to the forum! Here's a piece I started writing today. The music doesn't seem to flow very well in the current arrangement. Feels like the various sections need to be rearranged in a different order, as they don't quite work together. Like a bunch of different pieces have been shoehorned into one. Any suggestions very welcome! Also any comments on the rendition (made with my usual Music Studio for iPad).

  2. Hi everybody, Going over some unfinished ideas, I came across this fragment. It has some unbalanced parts... But do you think I should retake it? I have made progress with my rhetoric figures, and soon the first entries will be ready... I thin I can use them in any style and I need some fresh different music (than the galant style I was studying).

  3. Wow this is the instrument use in fantasies and animation! So pure which fits well for folk music. I do you can use it in that section for folk influence, but to use that with a Japanese seems weird for me😛.

  5. Hi, as I announced some days ago, I was working on how to frame my ideas and research about this topic. Finally, I started. new blog, which will be dedicated to musical rhetorics. It will be in English and Spanish and it will have some introductory entries, but the main part will be the figures. I will explain them and write two examples of each in different styles.   6. I 100% agree that the word placement is awkward in some places in this version. I made some changes and addendums in the newer version of this piece. I’ll post the updated version tomorrow 🙂

  8. Beginning with the bass drum and harp will be great. The usage of heavy percussion at the beginning reminds me of the finale of Mahler's 10th, and using a harp which is low volume in itself is great for an introduction. I do think the piano and strings passage can be the main course of the piece but that's subjective! This is the first time I have ever heard this instrument!

  9. . Ok Henry! No getting around it. I will make changes and see how it sounds. The spellings too! But yes, a definite improvement. I think i had to get something down on paper before I could grapple with the nuances---and there are so many details in chamber music....I think I'm in striking distance here though, now. Hopefully this next weekend I can insert a 8 or so bar coda based on the B portion of the melody and a terse cadence before launching into the B section proper. I've had so many problems, I think a piano rendering of the thematic ideas/structure would again be a big help.

Hi @hw1234, I think the music has some grammatical sense here with the use of bridge in b,15 and the use of similar accompaniment throughout the music which creates good coherence here, good job. B.3 and b.7 should be changed to a F minor accompaniment. B.12 and 13 should ends on the root position of the C minor chord, which is, C, instead of a second inversion G if you want that sense of cadence and finality. B.15 should have an F for the bass. The most important feedback is, of course, to extend your music more!!! This is one you should listen to since it is repeated so many times not from me but also from other members! You have many good initiations of ideas but seldom development of it to create real music. They are more like musical sketches but not music itself, and what you should do is to develop and incorporate these sketches into a meaingful whole of music! Keep working on that! Henry

  11. Hi @Alex Weidmann, For me I do agree on this. The 1st section which features piano and strings is the longest for a minute and a half, then there are bunches of different passages featuring harp, brass, strings. The idea to begin the section in 1:38 with the bass drum and harp but now it's unrelated to the first section. I love the hollow strings in it with the harp lamenting, but suddenly brass infringe at 2:09 with a low string melody later. At 2:31 the marimba is introduced which is great, and in 2:50 it suddenly becomes Japanese with the style of The Magical Faun Mk II. However I don't think this a bad thing, but a very good thing at the beginning of the composition, since this means you have many materials to work on! The issue you have here is the uniformity of the passages. Do you want to feature a uniform of styles and tonalities? You can first work on each of them and see how the transitions work later.   12. Hey - great job with this! I think your vocal vst sounds much better and realistic and connected and smooth! I hope you win! I also did notice that you didn't end in the same key as you started with this piece which is a point I made in one of my reviews of your other pieces that you often seem quite clingy to your chosen key-center without modulating. But I am happy to hear that that is not true in this piece! Thanks for sharing!

  13. Wow - what a beautiful moving picture of that Mercury or Moon sized planet in orbit around (presumably) a blue giant star! I like your brand of orchestration and harmony! It's very individual and unique and I can tell its you from hearing your music. I noticed you are getting quite adventurous with your chromatic mediant choices in this piece! That is great to hear! I did notice however that you rarely modulate out of your key center and this piece ends in the same key it started in. I know in video games it is often quite important to be able to loop a track so being able to return to the same key center one started in is very important. But in cinematic-styled music such as this - I don't think it's a must for you to finish in the same key you started in and your music could use the freshness and excitement of more adventurous modulations and de-coupling from any particular key center as the home-base of the piece.   15. I'm glad this piece has been retaken from past entries. It's good work. The modulations are soft and perfectly developed. The only thing I miss is a bit of "rest". Although the piece is not long, the speed needs a bit of slower contrast, in my opinion.

  16. Hi @Carl Koh Wei Hao, I enjoy this very much and I am the same with Daniel that it reminds me of the Fantaisie-Impromptu! The modulation to Eb major reminds me the second movement of Chopin's Third Piano Sonata and the Eb major section of his first ballade. The accented chords of b.80-81 seems unrealistic but other than these the recording is great! Your ending is great with that tranquillo and misterioso touch. Thanks for sharing! Henry

  17. This is a piece for wind quintet that I've been at for the past few months. I really wanted to take a deep dive into quartal harmony, and it's been fun figuring out how to use this style for my own compositions. I'd love any kind of feedback, and hopefully you enjoy!
