  5. This is quite a fanfare-like and march-like movement! With very triumphant explosions of emotion but also with some foreboding phrygian parts. About the score: This is very confusing. The Horns are clearly in F, not in D (and the key of the piece is Db not D). These Horns are also valved horns. Valved horns can play in any key and so don't need different crooks to attach to their instrument which would re-tune the instrument into the key of the piece they're playing. There are usually different crooks of different lengths that make the Horns higher or lower depending on the key they need to be in. But valved Horns are always in F (although they have a Bb horn trigger for the upper registers of their range which the Bb horn sounds better and more in-tune on). In the modern day and times there's virtually no reason to display the horns in any other key since the valved horns can play the whole chromatic scale quite easily. The end of the movement is quite conclusive and triumphant! Great job and thanks for sharing!

  6. Here's another live performance from Neil Crossland's recent piano recital. He deserves props for tackling my hideously difficult first movement! 😵‍💫 He even plays it faster than the metronome mark!! You can hear he's struggling near the end; but his interpretation is really interesting. It sounds nothing like the midi version; but thanks to Neil I've seen the piece in an entirely new light! This is the programme note I wrote for the recital: "This composition has a metronomic rhythm, like a train travelling along a track at constant speed. The rising chord progression in the first movement creates a feeling of optimism, as the melodic fragments above fizz with excitement. The second movement is a simple study of rhythmic variation. Each movement comes to an abrupt end, as the train shudders to a halt." Updated scores also attached.

  7. Yeah because when I was listening alongside the score, I was confused to find those notes different from the recording! I thought I looked into the wrong bars but actually not haha! Yes this one is real hard, particularly you have to play those chords with lightness and humor which increases its difficulty! However the pianist did a real fascinating job on this! Henry

I am unaware about how copyright works with music so I'll take a look at that. Oh right, I wanted to use E# throughout but I must've forgotten to go over those bits, I will do that too! Thank you very much for your insights! I did not intend to write it as a funeral march, but I see it too now! That is actually somewhat fitting, considering what I've written it based on, so I'm glad you mentioned that!

Hey @Alex Weidmann, I thouroughly enjoy these two movements and I feel like I'm listening Schumann's Album for the Young. l love how you use the changing of register to create the carefree and funny atmosphere, with the charming texture of a child's march. I actually love the non-ending of the movement 2 since it provides humour there. It seems that the recording is a major second lower than the score! The pianist really does a great job of conveying the joy of the movements, props to him (and your wallet!) Thx for sharing! Henry

  10. Hello @piajo, As Peter mentioned I love the funeral quality in it with that bassline movement and tonic pedal. Like Peter I love the constant change of major and minor which is quite Schubertian and it indeed enhance the tragic color of the music. Also I love about the thick texture of the piece, it definitely enhances the marching quality of it. That's very true, and you should also add the copyright acknowledgement too! Yeah I freakingly love C# minor! You can see that from my own sonata lol. Thx for sharing! Henry

  11. Hello piajo and welcome to the forum! Submitting scores without your name in the corner might be a bit dangerous in the online world! Just something to consider. This starts like a funeral dirge - it reminds me of Thomas Newman - the film composer who wrote the music for the "Shawshank Redemption"! The constant changing between the major and minor 3rd is really affecting and brings a bittersweet tinge to the music! Although you're quite inconsistent with your enharmonic spellings - sometimes you write F, sometimes E#. But I do think that you made the right choice to display this in the key of C# minor (which is @Henry Ng Tsz Kiu's favorite key! LoL) Thanks for sharing! Peter

  12. Hi Samuel! These variations are coming along quite nicely! For me it would be easy to fill up the empty space that you haven't written yet because I just default to writing my variations based on the model of the theme. And the theme here is gorgeous btw. And quite melancholy - yielding very affecting variations thus far! What's keeping you from finishing this piece? I think my favorite part so far must be how Variation IV starts - the minor 7th omitting the 3rd sonority and those half-diminished chords are very ambiguous and I love that sound. I really hope you finish this! Thanks for sharing. Peter
