  1. The violin plays the part of the bird soaring into the higher registers, gliding through the New York City sky. The piano is the city in all of its industrial intensity. The construction workers, cars moving, people rushing to get to work. There is a constant joyfulness within this piece that should make you want to get up and go do something. When performed, the musicians should perform with energy, excitement, and power.- c.r. City Birds (for violin and piano) [mp3=caryan92][/mp3]
  2. Written after finishing The Divine Comedy for the first time. The last phrase of the entire book spoke to me; “so may my words and your heart share one way” I heard bits and pieces of music as I thought about that phrase as it lingered in my mind. - c.r. so may my music and your heart share one way ( work in progress ) [mp3=caryan92][/mp3]
  3. There’s not much to say about this piece. It is one of the first solo violin pieces that I have ever composed. It is strange considering that I have played violin for over 12 years now but never really enjoyed composing for it. The piece sounds like a ring spinning round and round, balancing with grace. ring (for solo violin) [mp3=caryan92][/mp3]
  4. This was a piece I wrote when I first heard the music of John Adams. I was so intrigued by his “Gates” idea that I decided to incorporate it into my style of composition. It is called “FLOOD" because during my compositional process, the notes on the page were so squished together that they were flooding the entire page with blotchy black things. It took me a while to resize and adjust the score so that it was a bit easier to follow. As you may notice, the score still has some minor issues involving adjustment and glitches. But, it’s nothing that a good pianist can’t look past!- c.r. FLOOD
  5. I was sitting around in my apartment, it was raining outside and nothing was happening. It was like, time had stopped. I started to think about what other people were thinking; if they were as heavily bored as me? Shortly after, I was still thinking and all of the sudden the phrase “I am not” popped up in my head. Then I remembered how many times I have heard people say “I am not” during all my social interactions. People openly admitting what they aren’t. It struck me as very interesting and beautiful. I wanted the music to be light and trance-like. I also had the idea to have the Glock. player also speak the voice part from listening to David Lang’s “Little Match Girl Passion” where multiple vocalists are also percussionists throughout the piece. The piece should not be taken negatively. It is an uplifting piece with human words. i am not [mp3=caryan92][/mp3]
