Profile Information

  • Biography
George Koutras (geokoo) was born in Athens in 1981. He bought his first guitar at age 14 and for the next three years he taught himself to play rock ’n’ roll and the blues. At 17 he decided to devote himself to gardening.

Eventually he studied classical guitar, music theory and piano. By 2005 he had completed his studies, having obtained Diplomas in classical guitar (2005) under the tutelage of soloist C. Kotsiolis, and Advanced Music Theory under composer T. Maropoulos (Harmony, 2000, Counterpoint, 2003, and Fugue, 2005). He also took seminars on choral conducting and the Kodaly method by Maestro and educationalist M. Patseas.

In 2006 he formed a guitar duo with ADONIS, which mutated into the Swing Shoes, a band that has toured Greece ever since. Their debut album “Ladies & Gents, Here’s The Swing Shoes” was released in 2009 on Prominence Recordings.

Since acquiring his first guitar, he has experimented with a number of different musical instruments, such as mandolin, banjo, slide guitar and the clarinet. His work incorporates several compositional techniques and ideas – tone colour, counterpoint, polytonality, and diagonal composition – while also remaining open to a healthy dose of randomness.

He has written five works, two of which are properly recorded and mixed and the rest have been demoed. He waits for the proper circumstances (time & money) that will allow him to record the rest as well – remember that he lives in Greece!
