  1. I specialise in Wind, although I only consider myself a performer on Clarinet. I've been kinda brought up to try out lots of different instruments (my first clarinet teacher played clarinet, flute, saxaphone, oboe, bassoon, viola and piano to grade 8+) Because I want to be a teacher, I want to be able to (technically) understand as many instruments as possible, just so I can help out people who need technical advice. However I don't pretend to be able to produce feeling or musicality on any instrument I learn, just the clarinet. :ninja: It also helps when I'm composing, since I know how difficult certain parts will be.
  2. Hi! Sorry I haven't been online in ages, will try to redeem myself. This is another piece in the same style as Tattercoats- sort of mock medieval/celtic music. This one is a lot more orchestrated than the last piece I did, since the last one was sort of empty. Inspiration: a holiday in a place called Bungay here in the UK- even this early in the year, the ground was completely covered with snowdrops. It rained the whole time we were there, so all the flowers seemed really clean. The whole piece just felt natural, old (we stayed in an old manor house) and peaceful. 3. Thank you. :( I agree that the orchestration is limited- I wanted it to sound folky, so I was scared of putting too much into it in case I lost that. But what you say makes a lot of sense- I'll get right on that :w00t:
  4. Thank you
  5. Great work! The orchestration is brilliant and all the instruments blend well. I especially like the piano part- it's subtle but manages to distinct itself, especially at the beginning where the reverb fades into the strings. :D When it goes into the "triumphant" theme around 3:00 the timps seem a little heavy- as in, the main melody is flowing and continuing, and the timps sort of interrupt it. I don't know if that's what you intended?

    Chanter

Hah! I suppose for bagpipes grace notes are important, but still... :D
  7. I think yes and no. As in, most people who study music, or play an instrument, tend to be more intelligent- if only because the school systems selected them to play for that reason. But no, because musical talent is an independant asset. There's a difference between thinking music and knowing music...
  8. Dan quoted that, not me. **sucks at HTML whatnots** Although I adore Chrono Trigger music. :P My boyfriend introduced me to that. I've always loved Nobou Uematsu, too- it characterized the whole Final Fantasy series. :) And then Final Fantasy 10-2 arrived, and everything died a horrible, horrible death....
  9. Thanks :P
  10. Ok, that makes a lot of sense- I'll get right on that :) Um, Jazz-wise I listen to Louis Jordan, Blues Brothers, Danny Elfman's jazz compos (like in Chicago) and the Grim Fandango soundtrack. Which is a pretty sad combination, now I think about it :P
  11. Nobou Uematsu is great :P Have you been on ocr? OverClocked ReMix - Unofficial Game Music Arrangement Community

    Chanter

 They don't have to be a part of the bagpipe, though... sort of like a guitar with an amplifier. So they often seem like reeded recorders more than anything.
  13. Thank you both for your critique :o I found all your comments very helpful! Mike, you're right about the S&G version- they basically meshed two songs together. And you're also right about their songs being amazingly melodic :) Do you think this piece would be better if I used more of their countermelodies/harmonies in it? Robin, someone suggested that I write a "strict" melody on the trumpet over the top- do you guys think this will help it to be more focused? I don't really know how to make it less static. (Most of my jazz education was playing lower-school standard "Easy" jazz, which isn't too helpful )

    Chanter

Does anyone here play the Chanter, or know where I can get a decent soundfont of one? I'm buying one in the next few weeks but it'll take me longer to learn it than it will to mix it... On that subject, what traditional/folk/medieval instruments do you guys enjoy listening to?

    Trills

They're quite easy on the clarinet- for every note there's about a million "shortcut" keys, so you can pretty much press a key and wish for a trill :P And yeah, I agree. Practice. And find a point on the keys where the balance is light enough to trill without breaking your hand...
