  1. Hey thanks for posting this; I am new to composing and facing the blank page is pretty hard for me. This might give me an idea of where to start when composing a piece.
  2. Wow, I really enjoyed this. I'm not really experienced with music theory and orchestration, so I can't really come up with many criticisms to give you. But on a listeners point of view, it sounded pretty good. I love your use of percussion, being a percussionist myself I'm glad to hear someone that uses it very effectively. I agree with N.S. Canzano on that I couldn't identify the theme very well, although in some ways that made me want to listen more. All in all, I really enjoyed this piece.... keep composing.
  3. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. What are some good examples of fugues that I could listen to?
  4. This will definately prove to be useful... *bookmarks* thanks for the link.
  5. Allright. I am a percussionist and I've been playing for a little over 3 years, and I mess around on other instruments such as piano and guitar. Just recently I bought a music theory book and finale , and I started to compose. I have a pretty good ear for hearing certain notes, and knowing what "sounds good" as opposed to what doesn't. (This is how I got away with making rock songs on the guitar). Up until recently, I didn't know why things sounded good or not. So, I decided to give this composing thing a go, so I wrote a very short piece for string orchestra which I might use in later compositions. When writing it I just wanted to explore certain harmonies and melodies and how to utilize each instrument, and I also wanted to just get some stuff down on paper. Just saying what I am doing right, what I need to change and what I need to work on will be very beneficial to me. MP3 can be found here. By the way: All of the splits are divisi, but on Finale I couldn't find the expressions that said "div." or "unis." Do you have to type it out yourself? Thanks in advance. Idea for Piece.pdf
