im the totally opposite, i need the recording to fully understand how a score works, i just can't see the lines of notations going through my brain and processing them as sound. Many would disagree, but i need something audible, im that kind of guy. (but also at the same time i'm trying not to over-rely on just listening) for example, i compose a piece for a violin, i can imagine what it will really sound like when the performer plays it, so i will ask my violin sessionist to play it according to the way i want it to be (with minimal scoring). i use really good sounding samples from east west to first create a mock-up which usually sounds 30% of what i really want, then i make use of the performer to create my vision, record it down, and wala- totally awesome (totally what i would expect) . so for me, the performer brings out my vision, and i can't see myself just having that vision in my head, music is meant to be shared anyway! just my 1 cents worth! i know many would disagree, but i can't really read scores and imagine them in my head. and to illustrate my point even further, take for example the following "quintet" done by a fellow YC forumer: http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/quintet-flute-clarinet-violin-viola-cello-18000.html first I looked at the score, and i tried to imagine how it would sound like ( I did, but gave up after awhile) I downloaded the midi. Listened to it with references to the score *** Thought it sounded really awful, because the midi played back with only a piano sound with weird modulations. *** Composition wise, i thought it was quite abrupt, the flow of the piece was kind of weird IMHO *** DON"T understand the great critics received by the piece *** Might have a totally different stand if it was rendered with better samples in an audio format Don't start flaming me, i've looked at the score, and it doesnt mean if it REALLY LOOKS LIKE A SCORE somewhat, it would sound nice, infact, i think the midi gave me a clearer picture that i thought that piece sucked to a certain extent, the counterpoints sound strange, and some of the lines don't go well together (again, just a damn stupid opinion of mine) So there you have it, my personal take on your topic "Music only on scores" likewise, i know any music guru here could just take a listen to my tracks and go (this guy's got no musical sh*t in him, just a melody with very basic harmony lines or smth, he only knows how to cover it with production) ( and also the reason why I'm trying to focus a lot more on traditional harmony and theories in my music studies now) btw, just so maybe i can get more constructive criticism at the same time, check out my latest piece which is for a clarinet ensemble (3 clar 1 bass clar) : http://www.sympheramusic.com/TheWorldsEndClarVer.mp3 this clarinet ensem version is a version i derived from an original piece made earlier on ( was just experimenting with my new stormdrum 2 library i got from east west, and sort of made this piece): http://www.sympheramusic.com/281208WorldsEnd.mp3 flame away :)

i personally thought it was a great film, and i am also a very pop guy, but i do not think that the soundtrack deserves the number of awards it got; IMHO it is much more like a hype kind of thing rather than something that really deserved what it got. But still like i said, it was functional, but there were really many better options out there. (AS ALWAYS, whats new.)

Adding on to the original intent of this thread somewhat 4 years ago? I believe that answer is a firm YES. video game music is worthy of concert, under the hands of an experienced orchestrator. Just take a look at the VERY RECENT Echoes Of War Project done by Eminence Symphony Orchestra. Basically they got some of the top arrangers/orchestrators from japan (video game music industry) to re-arrangement Blizzard's music (Warcraft, starcraft etc.) into an epic orchestral compilation album. The level of musicianship involved is really high and should not be undermined just because these are not coming from a classical master of some sort. I URGE all YC members to go hear it. P.S this is not some midi thingy that Derek previously posted and urged you guys to listen, check this one out, really. ANd like wad Aangiere said, 100% agreed.

er, i see that as pure exaggeration, sorry. :whistling: anyway, the Final Mix does sound better, but i feel that its still kinda empty at some parts. the piano and violin part at the middle, i feel that its kinda "squeezed" in if you get what i mean, it doesnt really feel natural in there. Overall its a nice piece, :).

hi marius , hehehe... if you look at my profile <-- , u see (UEMATSU CRAZY GAME COMPOSER) hahaha..! Im more geared towards the japanese VGM rather than the western :P. heavily influenced by composers such as nobuo uematsu, joe hisaishi , yasunori mitsuda , kenji ito (u get it, all the great JAp VGM composers ) , as i also intend to work in japan (although its gonna be a long long way ). Hmm, when you say two computers, its for different sections right ? Like maybe the woodwind and brass goes on com 1, percussion n strings goes on another? I would be able to get 2 powerful coms, im currently running a AMD dual core with 3gb ram and 3 harddisks that totals up to 1TB harddisk space :P. My intention is to really go pro and expand the limits of my music. Yea, i agree that the percussion on this piece is sort of simple, just that snare n it keeps repeating (i dont have a flare for percussive writing) haha :). I always try to keep the arrangement simpler with less complex orchestrations but i'm currently trying to improve myself to write more complex stuffs n train myself on harmony n chords (still finding a suitable teacher =x). Thank you for listening ! Will post something more recent soon ! cheeers :) -
Yea, understood! :).. =) Hope to see ya around, do check out my music too~! :)

i got the gold and i must say its fabulous, though im gonna upgrade to platinum soon as its much much better. I'm starting to do more and more "proffesional" works so i feel the need for the platinum and its xp ! EWQL libraries are generally great sounding e.g the Ra or stormdrum , stormdrum 2 is coming out! ( NAMM 07) ! yumyum, time to heavily invest in all these great sounding samples as i progress musically and in work =).

Hi guys, im totally new to this forums which i just discovered! This is the first piece i am going to showcase - We Will Save Them My Friends. It is from my album entitled "Promise", which can be found at CD Baby: TERA: Promise . This is the full version and the only track in my album which i'm letting people download for free ^^. Hope you guys will enjoy it, hope to see any C&Cs! thanks =) We Will Save Them My Friends http://www.sympheramusic.com/WeWillSaveThemMyFriends.mp3 This piece is part of the album's story where the Hero, with his friends go on rescue mission! i think i took around a few days to get done with this song, i spent a day on a demo version which i let some of my friends and family hear to get feedback =) . Basically this song is meant to be something like an "encouragement" song a happy feeling , someething more positive as compared to other of my works. My music and this piece is very much inspired by video game music and this piece depicts something like a happy "adventure" rescue theme !

Ok, heres my first attempt to review a major work ^^. Overall, i find the whole piece cinematic and a tad too "ambient" for my liking. I can hear interesting chord changes here and there but i think this piece lacks a strong melodic movement . The chord changes seem to be quite predictable too in the sense that it all nicely changes one after another. Now on to the parts i enjoyed =) , this piece is beautiful by itself, the way how the instruments come in and some parts in which they counterpoint. I like the part where the flute solo is too ! Overall , i enjoyed some parts of the piece, but i feel that it is lacking in some dynamics n melodic structure to push the piece even further. Phew.. that was my first attempt to give something constructive, its a great piece though! Hope you don't mind me =)
