  1. Thanks for the kind comments and welcome! I've been composing for around 3 years. My first year or so I was pretty bad as I was just learning the ropes, basically how to use Anvil Studios properly and just teaching myself how to write music. Eg. Lazydayz (my first midi) Therin (probably like 6th or something. I overuse the auto-chord feature and pretend I'm a genius! haha :P . I still like the ending part to this day though, I love bursts of random inspirado) Most of my better pieces come from the latter half of my second year, as I was becoming insanely prolific and confident in my work, and plus I had finally mastered Anvil. Most of the midi's in my first post above are from 6-13 months ago. It got so crazy that I'd randomly give myself little challenges, such as: Write something short with a bright, forest inspired theme in less than 10 minutes! (Sprite Forest) or Write something using only A viola, Muted electric guitar, FX 1 (rain) and the guitar fret noise. also.. In less than 30 minutes! (Sands of Total Awesomeness) I haven't really done much of note lately since I am still trying to adapt to moving beyond Midi and into different programs. Hopefully soon I will get back to the level I was with Anvil with some of the more advanced programs like Finale and FL Studios. It seems I have to be comfortable in a workspace before ideas start to flow.
  2. This looks promising. Thanks
  3. I stumbled upon this site recently, and while reading many posts I found myself increasingly inept at understanding some of the more technical jargon the many composers here throw around. I have never received any formal music education but have been composing for roughly 2-3 years now, basically playing it by ear and throwing notes around until a piece develops. I've learned alot in that time, but unfortunately very little about the language musicians use to describe... well, music. Now that I am moving on from Midi and into FL studio and eventually Finale, I'd like to learn what I've missed in order to perhaps improve my ability past the point of just wingin' it, and also be able to communicate better with other composers. Are there any resources out there on the net or even on paper that people could recommend? Or mabye just a glossary of music terms and whatnot? I'll probably take a formal Music Theory course in College sometime in the future, but who knows when that will be. In any case, any help would be appreciated :D .
  4. I glanced at the rules and noted that the usual way to do things around here was to do just that, but I think its probably better that I took a different route, haha. ;)
  5. Yea, like I said it was mostly to test out the string samples than anything else, though I could have been more implicit with the source I agree. I have attempted to convert some of my own midi's using the same technique but they just don't sound right. If I plan of composing in FL it seems like I have to start from scratch, and not rely on the zillions of midi WIP's I have stashed away. Hopefully I'll have some new stuff up soon!
  6. Hey all, I'm new to the place, and figured I should throw up some of my compositions. I've never really stumbled upon a place where my work can be critiqued until now, so some of these are older compositions from a year or more ago. I've mostly worked in Midi format, and still do for the most part but have also dabbled in sequencers and soundfonts as well. Most of my stuff can be considered orchestral I suppose, so I figure this is an appropriate place. Please don't hesitate to tell me otherwise if thats the case. My .midi's will sound like they should if you have a Microsoft GS Wavetable SW synth as your Midi playback synth. Some of my compositions sound utterly terrible or just odd on other synthesizers so for some i've included an Mp3 as well. Finished Midi's Applecore's Theme (Midi) A composition inspired by the one of the Characters in the novel War of the Flowers, a very brash fairy named Applecore. Ruins (Midi) I wrote this to go along with some kind of ruin level in a game.. I imagined the hero coming back to his village, slowly discovering more and more of the carnage until he was in a rage. This is an older work. Transient Freefall (Midi) (mp3) Sounds like its not done in .midi, but it is. At least on my synth, lol. This was just a random composition to see what could be accomplished with the midi format. I've included an mp3 as well 'cause it might not sound right on other comp's. Child's Play (Midi) A composition trying to emulate the short attention span and haphazard playtime of two young kids. The strings are the boy and the flute is the girl. They have a few conflicts but it all works out in the end  . Deathborn (Midi) (Mp3) This is actually partly not my original work, I hand-sequenced most of it from listening to the original which appears in the game F-ZERO GX. Its the theme for the main villian of the Game, Deathborn, and since the original tune didn't have an ending (just repeated endlessly) I added one of my own. Some of my recent work with FL Studios: Because I just started working in FL studios, at least doing Orchestral stuff, I needed to learn the program a bit better so I decided to sequence a couple of my favorite Street Fighter II tunes and turn them into short orchestral pieces. The instruments are from Eridol Orchestral if you are wondering. Ken Tribute (mp3) There is still one small trouble with this one, the trumpet I choose for the main melody refuses to behave itself and sounds out of tune in some parts. I'm still trying to figure out if I can fix it without changing instruments. Guile Tribute (mp3) I like how this one turned out. Poo Live (mp3) I also did a little bit of the Great Mighty Poo song from the original Conkers Bad Fur Day just for fun. I actually did this one before the other two just to see how good the strings were in the Eridol pack.
