Click on the staff tool and the right click on the staff that you want to apply measure numbers to. A menu will pop up and you'll then need to click "edit staff attributes". On the bottom right there will be a list a boxes that you can click...one of them should be for measure numbers. As with most Finale questions, their help manual is pretty thorough. For instance, you could've found this answer under "M" for measure numbers. This should help in the future rather than having to wait for an answer here.

1. Finale's playback is weird at times. It's hard to fix this without being there. 2. Change the time signature. In the dialogue box it'll show a measure with three quater notes for 3/4. Change the # of beats to 1 and then change which note gets the beat until the sample measure shows one dotted half note in the measure. The time sig will still be 3/4 but it will beam all of your eighth notes together. For future reference this is because Finale works on commonly accepted practices...this one being that all notes in a single beat are beamed together (except for how it automatically beams 4 eighth notes together in 4/4 time...I hate that). A 3/4 time sig can either mean three quarter notes get the beat (three eighth note groups) or one dotted half note gets the beat (one eighth note group). Simple meter or compound meter...that makes the difference. 3. I really don't understand this question.

Pardon the ignorance but what is CMOS?

The power went off at my house the other day. When I got home I turned the comp on and it booted fine. However, I haven't tried to restart it since then. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for the help.

Here is a lot of info on my computer. eMachines T6410 Media Center PC Specs. Desktops Specifications. I think the issue is with the video memory. It takes 128mb. 2048-128=1920 which happens to be 1.875GB. This is the RAM I bought: 2GB kit (1GBx2), 184-pin DIMM, DDR PC3200 upgrades for eMachines T6410 Desktop/PC, CT463695 from Crucial.com They matched it to my computer brand and model. I checked for myself and everything matched except the voltage. I think my original was 2.5v and the new stuff was 2.6v. On the plus side I didn't realize I have a firewire port. I was thinking I might have to get one eventually.

Someone told me that they sold me 2000 MB as 2 gig but in all actuality 2 gig is equal to 2058 MB. Those fractions don't work out to 1.87 (2000/2058) so I'm not sure he's correct with that. I'm still not sure why my computer won't boot correctly at times. It did it again on a restart. I turned it off, waited, and then it booted fine.

I'm reading it from Windows system. I also restarted my computer and it wouldn't boot again. I turned it off, waited 15 seconds and then turned it back on and it was fine. I'm at a loss as to what that problem is.

I just installed the 2GB of RAM I ordered last week. For some reason my computer wouldn't boot properly. It just came on and there was a black screen. I think I unplugged something somehow. I stuck the old RAM back in and it still happened so I checked all the connections and they seemed fine. However, after that it booted up. So I shut it down and reinstalled the new RAM...same problem! So I checked all the connections again and then it booted. It didn't boot correctly but it still came on. I shut it off, turned it back on and it was fine. I think I possibly needed to let it sit after plugging the power cable back in. Maybe to juice up the capacitors some...beats me. None of the connections felt like they were unplugged at all. Anyways, I say all that to say...WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Everything is quicker...from the page load speed all the way down to how fast the cursor highlights objects. I am a little miffed though. My system only reads 1.87GB. I paid for 2gig!!! Actually 2048 so it needs to read 2.05. I'll check it again after the next reboot. I hope I didn't screw something up because one of the sticks was a little difficult to get in. I think it was a misspaced notch in one of the slots.

That is a VERY informative link. I think I'm going to go with the MBox2 and Pro Tools LE. It's a good all in one type of thing. I can always get another sequencer later on and use the MBox to connect to it. I couldn't go the other way around since Pro Tools sequencer only works with Pro Tools interface. I'll get GPO for a decent starter sound library. I'm going to look into a Rode NT-1A. Possibly some other condensers later on. I think M-Audio makes a decent speaker set for about 250. Add another 100 for cables and other accessories and that'll put me at about 1100 total (excluding the 200 I just spent on RAM). Thanks again for the info and feel free to add any other suggestions. My mind is still not completely made up.

The question about the rit marking can be solved by adjusting the playback properties of the dynamic. Go into the dynamic dialogue box, highlight the rit., click on edit or modify, there should be a screen with different tabs at the top...you want to click "playback", then you'll change it to a tempo dynamic and where it says "set to value" you'll put the tempo number in there. Hope this helps in the future so you're not moving the dynamic around the score trying to get it to play the way you want.

1. I was thinking around 1k - 1500 just to get started. 2. The microphone was only going to be for vocals. However, there would be a chance (very slight) of recording something else i.e. violin, flute, cello, etc. I would like for it to at least sound like the singer isn't in a box. I was thinking a low end Rode might work. 3. More mics are a possibility, however, it's not something I'm going for at this point. 4. It's a spare bedroom in my house...maybe 11x11. I may have to do some sound proofing but at this point it's not a concern. 5. I'm not trying to pay the bills with this right now but I don't want to have to make extensive upgrades just so I can start taking contractual jobs. Thanks for the help. I don't think my computer has a firewire port which means that's something else I'll have to buy if I go that route. I've got a couple of friends who are in the business and I'm going to pick their brains a little as well to see what I should do. They're both in the studio all the time, however, they're hard to get to at times as well. If anyone's heard of Springs Theatre in Tampa they both do recording there.

Bob, You just threw something completely new into the mix with the audio interface thing. I guess that's what I knew I needed but didn't quite know what to call it. I'd prefer something with MIDI and audio that can get it all done. Perhaps this. Or maybe this. And finally. I'm not sure I want to pay for this one since it includes sonar le. I want sonar 6 so this seems a little pointless. There are other options that are complete sound card replacements. Would it be recommended for me to change out my sound card since I have the original one that came with my computer?

My main focus will be music for church choirs and orchestras. The style is typically a more contemporary one with hints of syphonic, jazz, pop, and rock influences. They will almost always be vocal pieces, however, there will be the occasional instrumental piece. I'm not looking to make a radio ready track...per se. I do, however, want to be able to create a very good representation of what my music is going to sound like. The tracks will be used as something much more marketable than handing someone a score. I have a PC or else I would get logic since I have experience with it already. I'm looking for something fairly similar. I think I'm almost sold on Sonar 6 Studio but the MBox2 is still calling. If I can find a quality MIDI-USB interface I'll probably go with Sonar. I can get sonar for 200 and MBox2 for 350. Can I get a quality MIDI-USB interface for 150 or less? The thing with Pro Tools is that I've been told it comes with a LOT of free plug ins. I don't know what Sonar comes with. Also, I currently only have my little PC speakers. I'm spending the money on new ones anyways so I might as well get some decent studio speakers. Thanks for the help. I'm tired of using Finale and then being done with the process. I'm ready to start making tracks to get my music out there and, if I'm going to spend the money, I want the best tracks I can get at this point. I don't get married until May so I still have some money to spend.

I currently do not have a way to plug my keyboard into my computer...much less a condenser mic or any other instrument I wish to use. I need something that can handle MIDI for my keyboard and then other audio inputs for additional applications (mics, guitars, etc.).

Tuplet tool in finale, quarter note quadruplets in 3/4
james 14 replied to rickstarke's topic in Tech Archives
Well a quadruplet in 3/4 is simply a measure of four dotted 8th notes. A good musician should read this easily...much easier than a quadruplet. I've actually never seen a quadruplet. The half note triplet shouldn't be too difficult. Click on the half note in simple entry and then click on the triplet figure in the same instrument panel. It should then show a half note as the cursor with a triplet behind it as you drag it around. Then you just click the three notes that you want in the measure. If you leave one out Finale will fill the space with a half rest until you decide to finish it later. Hope this helps.
