I dissagree. Yes, people aren't trying to write in the style of Baroque / Classical composers. The styles are definately different, but I would still say what we're making now is far inferior.
If you compare the best modern composers (Bernard Herrmann et al) to the greats of pre-1900, they can't hold a candle. There is nowhere near the structural or harmonic complexity. Maybe some minimalists do some interesting polyrhythms, but that's it. When I compare my own compositions to Vivaldi, I think they're scraggy. When I compare them to John Williams, I think they're brilliant.
I don't want my music to be *like* Vivaldi's, I only wish it were as good.
