  1. The first part was fantastic, then it sounded like a horrible nintendo varation set
  2. I think it's a very nice fugue. Once the 3rd voice comes in, we'll get it done!
  3. base 12 math will help you in the future.
  4. Anything by Stockhausen or the like...
  5. Well put, and well researched. Students welcome.
  6. I agree... The smart thing to do is always use a reduction, even if you have ideas about future orchrestration... It's not like it's un-orchestrateable in the future... Seriously though, I am 3000% against sibelius
  7. I'd like to have students that are willing to go beyond the threshold of tonality, but at the same time to know that form is important. I created a successful sonata which consisted of ternary in every movement, so I'd like the following from my prospective students: 1. Open Mindedness 2. Loyalty 3. Intellegence 4. Sacrosanctification 5. Empathogenesis 6. Entactogenesis Request: Glassworks
  8. There's some pretty decent free software that can save mp3s from any sound format but midi here
  9. Counterpoint isn't really that complex, when one voice stops moving, or is holding a tone longer than the basic rhythmic subdivision, you let another voice start moving... Simplicity itself.
  10. well, he said "The piece sounds great" therefore, it's likely he was using a computer for playback. And since he's online, it's likely he has a computer. Maybe he's just unfamiliar with his software and my answer would actually help him out... Thanks for being a dick when I offer him a shortcut...
  11. If you want finale to do it for you, click the staff attributes button, then double click the button thing next to the staff you want to make a new transposition for. Click the box for transposition, then click the select button. In the Key signature drop down box, it lists any transposition you could need...
  12. What's happening outside the school doesn't really effect you as an undergrad because all of your performers and performances are going to be at your school. You'd do well to pick a school with a good new music ensemble. Sometimes they let student pieces be performed... Of course entertainment wise, you might enjoy a more urban environment. Here in Houston we have one of the most active arts scenes in the country, and new music is performed at several venues outside of the university environment, but rarely student music. Also we have clubs and really whatever you could want except gambling (and even then, there are clandestine poker rooms about and Lake Charles is only 2 hours away). Small towns can be pretty boring man... It's really up to your personal preferences of what you want out of your time in college...
  13. I'd think it would be easier to work with a string orchestra reduction or a reduction of some sort, and then make orchestration decisions as part of your final phase. Of course you can notate on your reduction of what you want to do to the orchestration as you go, but with the reduction you can look and see where your climaxes are and make the best decisions on how to orchestrate them to bring about the full effect that you want...
  14. I think the bible of music theory is "Tonal Harmony in Concept and Practice" by Allen Forte... Anyone disagree?
  15. I think you can do it where you create a profile, but instead of adding the [[Category:YC Profiles]] you add [[Category:YC Music Articles]] at the bottom of your page.
