Fantasy on "The Little Mermaid"
Juan José replied to Monarcheon's topic in Orchestral and Large Ensemble
Really? That demonstrates the technical-academic issues and "errors" of music does not necessarily affect with the emotional impact of it (unless somebody blocks it with their intellect by noticing the errors). I literally felt like crying in several parts of this piece! Question: Is there a way you could make a piano solo version of this, and share it with the community? I would love to have it. -
Fantasy on "The Little Mermaid"
Juan José replied to Monarcheon's topic in Orchestral and Large Ensemble
Hey! I really, really liked this piece. Specially after 1:00 where the melody barely starts peeking its head a little bit. But my absolute favorite part is between 2:42-3:00. It awakes a feeling of nostalgia and romance that is so big... And then it comes again at 4:20. These are the type of compositions I really like, the melody is fantastic! It tells me a lot of stories. The part before the ending is gorgeous as well. Congratulations, I´d love to hear this live! By the way, I read the original "Little Mermaid" story by Hans Christian Andersen and is so sad. This represents the original story perfectly. -
Hello, Here is a composition I did a while ago. Feel free to comment and suggest in any way, as my purpose in this community is to learn as much as possible. Thanks.

Hello Monarcheon! Thanks, that was a lot of good advice. I will take it into consideration for the next piece, as there are "musical composition habits" in which one falls after a while of doing the things the same way. There are some points and terms, however, I don´t have clear, as I am not an academic trained composer, and more of a self-trained one. For example: Why? Please explain. What is that, exactly? You mean the dominant chord? Why? Is that a subjective opinion? I heard the piece and you are right! That´s really good advice! I will definitely experiment with that. Again, thanks so much for taking the time to review my piece. Will be posting more soon.

Hey I really like it! It transports me to a Studio Ghibli movie-like atmosphere! It would be great to hear it played by a real band. I´ll be checking the sheet music for learning purposes later today. Thanks for sharing! ;)

Hello fellow composers! Having made a research among the community, I realized there are tons of really good and pro composer here, so posting my music is kind of intimidating! ...But here we go: My aime is to be a film/video game composer, as many other people, among other dreams and goals as well. My style of music is not only "Epic Movie" music, I also like to compose relaxing, kind of world and New Age music. Among my favorite composers I love: Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Antonin Dvorak, Edvard Grieg and JS Bach. My non academic favorite composers and artists are: Enya, Vangelis, Kitaro, early Works by Sarah Brightman, Loreena Mckennitt, early Works by Yanni. And my favorite film composers are: James Horner (may he rest in peace), James Newton Howard, Joe Hisaishi, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, just to mention a few because there are a lot... So I tell you this for you to have an idea where my infuelnces come from, as that´s the music I hear the most. So here we go: (Any feedback would be highly appretiated, both regarding composition and mix):

El Cadejos, Op. 38 (excerpt, live)
Juan José replied to Austenite's topic in Orchestral and Large Ensemble
Wow! That was very powerful. I´m glad there are so many talented composers like you around in this forum! I really need to learn a lot. ;) Congratulations. -
Even though you probably already know him, you might find Vangelis´ music very helpful as reference for you own projects, as I find resemblance to his music in your piece. He is actually one of my favorite composers! :) Take a look here:

Hello! I like the mood it produces. It seems more a "Forest Battle" than a "Forest Whisper" to me after 2:28, though. Good job! Another thing besides the composition itself is the mix. I don´t know if it is because the earplugs I´m using, but it sounds really distorted at some points. Consider subtractive EQ and Level Balancing before exporting. ;)

Symphony No.4 ''Randstad''
Juan José replied to Maarten Bauer's topic in Orchestral and Large Ensemble
Hello! I am a new member of this community and just wanted to say I really liked this one. I really would like to orchestrate my music as professionally as you do! I tend to compose more "video-game/film like" type of music, so my music is very different than this, but I´ve always admired how complex and interesting things can be expressed by people who really know how to orchestrate. In fact, I will get Samuel Adler´s book on "The Study of Orchestration" in order to improve. Do you have any advice or maybe a book recommendation for someone that wants to get better at this? Thanks & Congrats! ;) -
Hello! Congratulations for your music and your upcoming book. First of all, it would be good to know what the book is about in order to see if the music would fit the story. Second, it is ok to use virtual instruments instead of real ones. While it is true one would prefer a real orchestra over a virtual one, a good composer can craft a good piece using basic stuff. Now, I sincerely believe you are walking the right path, however there is a problem in some of your compositions: melody is not clear. Remember that the melody is like a story, you are telling a story. Is a journey, you are taking people in a journey, but instead of words you are using motifs, instead of letters, notes, but is a story you are writting. Your stories are kind of unclear to me, sometimes I don´t understand where they are taking me. For example, what would you think if I say: "Yesterday I because it is a delicious after the clouds when I go because everytime I do then it will begin". Did you understand? What if I ask you to read an entire book written like that? You have to say something with the melody. You have to craft your melodies, really give them shape. Melody is the most important part of the composition, don´t forget it. If melody is not clear, then something should come and lead the people´s minds in the journey. In your music, sometimes I feel a beautiful story is emerging... and then it gets lost completly and I don´t understand where it is taking me. It´s really hard to follow up the musical ideas in some of these pieces, but as I say, it´s clear you are walking the right path! Just improve your melody crafting! :)

I was listening to your composition and I really liked it. The textures the voices produce are really beautiful and rich. I can feel how they makes me rise and fall in a good way. They also made my mind still and serene. There are tons of tensions here, however there is also a constant quality of peace floating around despite those tensions. The balance betwen the piano and the choir is very good, at least to me. I have a question, how is your composition process or workflow when crafting a piece like this? Do you play it in the MIDI Keyboard and tey turn it to sheet music? Do you create it directly in the sheet music without playing? I am very interested in knowing. Congratulaitons and thanks for sharing! ;)
