  1. I hope someone can help me with this :D . I'm cleaning up my orchestral score in Sibelius, and I'm not really sure if I should leave some of the empty staves there or not. I've looked through some scores, and the absence or presence of empty staves seems to be fairly arbitrary. Sometimes they're there and sometimes they aren't. Is there any sort of rule or guidelines for doing this, because I have absolutely no idea :) . The one thing I've done is taken out all the empty single line percussion staves, as all the scores I've seen do that.
  2. Heehee, no, that's interesting :D I'm not really sure that Australia has a national folk music. In terms of Aboriginal music, I could tell you about the didjeridu and clan songs, since one of my lecturers does nothing except go on about them :D . There are also the old folk songs by the settlers/convicts, but they're often very Irish/English based.
  3. I love the tones of the bassoon, the low area of the piccolo, the classically played saxophone, and duduk and shakuhachi :D . And I prefer the oboe to the cor anglais, even though the cor anglais is more mellow.
  4. I play violin, clarinet, and piano, all at pretty much the same level. At the moment I'm teaching violin as well, which can be frustrating since most of them are young kids, but I'm also finding it quite rewarding, especially when they make progress :) . I've played piano since I was about 4, and violin since I was 6. Clarinet I took up when I was 11, but it became my main instrument, until violin took over again after high school  . I love my latest violin, I bought it this year (and still haven't finished paying it off -- eeek!), but it has such a nice warm tone (plus I tune it ever so slightly flat so it's more resonant  )
  5. I'm so obsessed with Ravel it's funny :D . My lecturers know to expect Ravel assignments whenever it's a free choice now :P . The essay that I'm working on at the moment is about the use of imagery in Ravel's works, and how much it draws on imagery in earlier music. Oh, and my violin is named Maurice
  6. Heehee, why not? My page is www.doobymusic.cjb.net
  7. I've managed to have a listen now, and I like the sprightly quality of the melody, and the modal harmonies :P . I do have a couple of suggestions - I think there's room for a bit more textural variety and countermelodic material. What you have is nice, beginning with the simpler homophonic melody/chordal structure, but the piece could maybe beneft from some more variation as it progresses. I did enjoy listening to it
  8. I like to critique by ear first, then maybe look at a score. It's just an ingrained habit with me :P , when I was younger I didn't really have access to scores for analyses and things, and I had to transcribe and analyse things by ear. Of course, scores do make that a lot easier
  9. I'd like to do some critiques, but for some reason I can't download anyone's files? :)
  10. Thanks Wolf :) . I really should get the songs performed, although it's pretty hectic for me at the moment :) . Yep, that bit in the Tick Tock piece was a contrasting section that I put in to break it up the pace a little, and the melody is derived and augmented from the main melody. I had no idea about harmony when I wrote those early contredanses, so I just did what I thought sounded nice :P . Those were the days when I wrote and came up with all of my ideas on the computer. Now I do a lot of work on the piano, then put stuff into the computer.
  11. Hi, I'm a long time lurker here :). I write in a mix of styles, although mostly neoclassical. I'd like to hear what you guys think of my music. I'm a 19 year old uni student studying composition, and most of my stuff is chamber works. The music files are all on my website, and obviously the newer ones are better than the older ones ;). I'm also tackling my first major orchestral piece this year. www.doobymusic.cjb.net Thanks :D
