Beginning of a string quintet
Misiu replied to a topic in Incomplete Works; Writer's Block and Suggestions
Hmmm ... doesn't really convince me. Not a very strong start,.. a bit chaotic ... I think I'd need some more focus. Sorry :) Misiu ;) -
It's good, well done, quality work ... but musically still just an imitation to me...

Brass Quintet
Misiu replied to Tyaedalis's topic in Incomplete Works; Writer's Block and Suggestions
What you show here is something like ... 2 bars, just few notes ... that's why it's very difficult to get any idea where it should go and how you could further develop your piece. From here on it could basically go any direction. I think you should just try to focus and write a bit more, think about what would you like your piece to sound like, what kind of style should it have etc... or simply improvise, try to put some random notes ... see what happens. I do it often ... play with it, sometimes you can get quite surprising results which will help you define your piece and spontaneously show you the direction in which to continue. Hope that helps a bit... Good luck! :innocent: Misiu -
Black Ice Tales - Battle Theme
Misiu replied to Arkadiusz Reikowski's topic in Orchestral and Large Ensemble
Hi Arek, I don't know much about game music etc... but this one rocks! I like the moods and instrumentation ... percussion is cool and those unisono strings are very nice along with the brass. Samples sound also very nice. Do you create percussion part yourself from the scratch, or do you use ready-made loops? Good work! Misiu P.S. Good to see a countryfellow on the forum :) -
A small thing... really :P

Hi, Congratulations on you first piece! I liked it ... it's rather simple and could be a bit developed, but here you have a material to start with. You could perhaps develop a bit the melodic line in the clarinet, introduce some new harmonies ... I think it's a nice combination of instruments ... I liked the harp's accompaniment. I personally liked the ending very much ... I would perhaps only keep that last note in the clarinet for one more bar and just fade it out with some nice decresendo. Keep on working :) Best of luck, Misiu -
String Quartet No. 1 in F minor
Misiu replied to Misiu's topic in Incomplete Works; Writer's Block and Suggestions
Hi Everyone! Thank you very much for your comments, both encouraging to go on with the piece and giving me some ideas and options as to how to take it to a next level. I'm glad you liked it despite all the flaws in my harmony :) I think that at the moment that pizzicato ending is rather temporary, I need to figure out some more fluent transition. I love the idea of both introducing a new theme with a single instrument and introducing some pizzicatos ... I also think it's a good idea to make some shift in the mood, make it a bit more 'rough and louder' and still use some motives from the initial theme ... thanks for those ideas, we'll see how it goes. I was hit by some virus and currently lay in bed, recovering ... but as soon as I get better I'll get back to work. Recently I've been listening a lot to Shostakovich's quartets, Debussy's and Ravel's, are you familiar with them? ... I love them and they also give me a lot of inspiration. Hmmm, how could Shostakovich become so popular with all those 'mistakes' he made in his harmony :) Any other suggestions will be very appreciated! Thanx again! Misiu  -
Hey, Here's my String Quartet in F minor ... I don't know yet, whether this will be the first movement or any other ... I kinda got stuck and would be very happy to hear what you think about it and where could I take it next. Thanks in advance! You can listen to the piece here! ...or on my homepage at http://www.misiu.dk/index.php?compositions It's in an Album called 'Pieces for Strings' Looking forward to your comments and suggestions. Hi there, nice little tune, but I have some constructive comments ... it's a bit monotonous, you could try to make some variations in the accompaniment and not let the instruments play exactly the same rythm, e.g. in the begining ... later that harp comes out of nowhere, and it all looses a bit integrity. You seem to have quite many instruments in that piece, but it doesn't show through the music ... I don't think you're using them very efficiently. You could also think about introducing some more harmonical variations in the accompaniment, that could make it a bit more interesting ... right now it's a bit flat. The ending ... is quite sudden, doesn't really end like Bach ... perhaps something's wrong in the file? Keep on working, Cheers, Misiu

Little Serenade for Flute, Clarinet, Viola and Cello
Misiu replied to Misiu's topic in Chamber Music
Hey giselle, Thanks a lot for your comment! Well, that is always the big problem, fine tuning the performance, discussing music with a computer isn't one of the easiest tasks ... is it? As you noticed I did try make it sound a bit more realistic by adding some dynamic contrasts here and there ... but didn't spend too much time on it to be honest. It's always a problem ... not easy to teach a computer how to play a phrase etc. I guess it's possible, but it just takes a LOT of time and skills. I think the performance, interpretation itself is so important and can make an enormous difference. Even a crappy piece can sound marvelous when performed by a great musician, and fantastic composition can sound like scraggy when performed badly  ... therefore I need to find some great muscians to play my crappy pieces  to make them sound interesting. Thanks again for listening. Cheers, Misiu -
Hi giselle! Great piece !!! I personally loved it ... harmony, rythm ... great conversation of piano and clarinet! Really cool theme you had there on that clarinet ... and the ending, with that little piano 'bah' in the end ... very, very nice. I want to listen to it again already... This could be a first movement of a clarinet Sonate, perhaps you should consider to continue on it. It has a great drive, great 'language'! Fabulous! :P Cheers, Misiu

Hey ... perhaps some of you have seen this already as a supposed String Quartet .. well I decided I should wait with that quartet a bit and changed the piece into a little chamber music called 'Little Serenade' .. for flute, clarinte, viola and cello. Looking forward to your comments. You can find it here You can also go to my webpage and listen to it there, it's in the album called Chamber Music: http://www.misiu.dk/index.php?compositions ... or download it directly from the 'Download music' section, also from my webpage at: http://www.misiu.dk/index.php?download_music Cheers, Misiu

Nice piece, but as others mentioned I also think it's a bit too long. Nice but not very original ... simple, pleasant listening. You could either make it a bit more interesting by making some harmonical modulations, introducing something new there, or play with the rythm ... but then of course the piece could loose a bit of its character, depending on how you'd apporach it. But it's your piece and if you wanted it to have that monotonous feeling to it, then it's ok. Cheers.

Hey frantz, Glad you liked it :ninja: You know you can right-click on the link to the piece above and then click 'save document as...' and you should be able to save it on your hard disk. The file is ca. 3.5 MB so it should be easy that way. If that doesn't work I can of course also send it to your mail. It's a good idea to fix those unplayable parts... now you're just gonna start looking for a flute, harpischord and cello players that will put some emotions and real 'romance' into your composition :) Let me know if you managed to save it, otherwise you'll get it in email. Take care, Misiu :D

Hi, I just listened to your pieces and here's what I feel at the moment. First of all I think it's good you have 3 movements which make sense and fit together. I liked some rythmical ideas you present and how the two marimbas have a dialogue with each other. You present a distinct idea, theme in each movement and I like them .. but somehow I think it's missing something. After listening to all three movements twice, I can perhaps remember the theme from the first movement but nothing else ... and somehow it's not inviting to listen to it 3rd time. Perhaps it's tempo you use, it is kind of slow and monotonus, harmonies are a bit weak to me ... it's basically played with 2 mallets on each marimba, except that at some point in the bass marimba you play some chords, where you need 3 mallets. Perhaps you should just stick to only 2 mallets in each, or extend the bass marimba part and make the full use of 4 mallets, but it's good to decide on something. I once played a Toccata for solo marimba, written for only 2 mallets, second movement was 4 mallets and 3rd again 2 mallets. It was a really cool piece, atonal but very cool to play. Even though the texture of it was very simple, only 2 malets it was very interesting, with changing tempos, harmonies etc. I somehow miss that in your piece. In general I think the piece has its good sides and a bit worse ones. Its form is a plus, presentation of themes, the dialogue you create with both marimbas ... but it's all going kinda slow and perhaps a bit too monotonus. But perhaps if you performed it for real, you could play with it and create some good emotions and the whole thing would gain some substance. Anyway, keep up the good work. Best regards, Misiu

Hey again, So I did experiment again ... and this time came up with some new configuration, which makes your piece sound a bit more like a neo-baroque work. I used flute, harpischord and cello. You can listen to it here. I tried to keep the original tempo this time. I listened to it again few times and I really like it, especially the first part of it, when everything develops, I like harmonies very much. I need to listen to the middle part some more... I hope I'll appreciate it more with time :) If it comes to playablity ... some parts are out of scale, especially in the cello part, besides there are some chords in that part ... but perhaps it would be possible to play them arpeggio. Well ... as I told you, it's a very nice piece and I enjoy it very much! Take care my friend and keep up the good work ;) Cheers, Misiu
