  1. I love more avante-garde music (I worship Schoenberg, for example,) however, I don't feel that I understand it well enough to begin to write it with any degree of intelligence. I don't think that you can go forward with the music unless you thouroughally understand the past, and yes, very obviously this is in a middle ("heroic") period Beethoven style, albeit with some slightly more adventurous harmony. Leaving FSU because I can't afford it anymore, so I'm moving back to GA, to get in-state tuition. Bill
  2. The first movement that I've completed in this work is actually the Finale. It is cast in a typical sonata-allegro form, with a slow introduction. I was trying to use the Beethoven/Brahms idea that the essential motif's of the piece should find their way into as many places as possible. Also, in the exposition, both the first theme and closing theme are fugues. I'll be submitting this movement next week as part of my comp portfolio to get into the composition program at Georgia State. I'll also be recording it with a quartet tomorrow night, so I'll post that mp3 once I get it up. thanks, Bill String Quartet in Gm, Finale.mus String Quartet in Gm, Finale.mid String Quartet in Gm, Finale.pdf
  3. Here's the second movement of a viola sonata I've been working on lately. This movement took maybe 5 days on and off to write. I'm still working on the outer movements. The form is a large ternary, made up of smaller ternary sections: A B A' aba' cdc' aba' Also, I haven't finished writing in the articulations and expression marks in finale. I write everything out longhand first, and just haven't had time to put everything into finale. Tell me what you think, Bill Viola Sonata, II.mus Viola Sonata, II.pdf
  4. Brahms Beethoven Mahler Mozart (mainly his operas, alot of his instrumental music I can't stand) Schoenberg Berg Stravinsky
  5. I always write out a condensed score on paper (generally for 2 pianos,) and have all of the orchestration done in my head, and then enter it into the computer in full score.
  6. Check out "Structural Functions of Harmony," by Schoenberg. That book changed my life.
