  1. Hello again! I posted a humble thread one and a half year ago, now i am sort of doing it again, because i still have the same problems. But now i am showing a couple more tracks also, and intend to make this thread my base of operations for any future works. I have no musical knowledge, i sort of self-learned all of it. Therefore i do not know the any professional musical terms. I am using Guitar Pro for writing music. It is easy to use, has a nice multitrack view, and most importantly, both a virtual keyboard, and a virtual guitar fretboard to input the notes. This is essential for me since i know what notes harmonize when looking at the fretboard, but have little idea about the actual notes. My concept is doing monumental , sci-fi movie style music with modern sound, combining it with rhytrm often used in black and doom metal. It should be majestic and fanatical. If posting criticism, i do not mind if you are harsh, just tell me how i could improve, for that's why i am here. The tracks: Fall To The Dark Side: This is the one i posted in the old thread. I actually got surprisingly nice responses. The following two were parts of a soundtrack i wrote for my own game. faction1.mp3, or if you prefer, the Interstellar Navy theme. It'll probably work better if you have something like that to associate it with. Simple, militaristic. Big grey ships, functional looking. faction2.mp3 or Empire of Light theme. They are a bit like a sect of zealots shrouded in mystery. Far less numerous then Imperial Navy, their ships are blood red, eerie looking, more high-tech. At start they are your typical evil faction, but then turn out to be actually the better of the two factions. I hope very much, that again, there will be some people who like it, and also ,that i'll hopefully find ways how to improve their sound. I cannot describe what's wrong with my tracks, but i was never happy with them. Is it wrong musically, or is the sounding bad, i don't know... byes! o/
  2. Thanks for the very nice comments, i am really glad you like it. Fermion, yeah it's supposed to be metal-ish, that is one of my 'features'. Spherenine, the song itself wasnt inspired by a specific band, but i draw big inspiration from Dimmu Borgir for example. There are a number of doom metal bands i listen to, Shape of Despair, Within Tears, My Dying bride for example, but MDB has different mood that what i try to achieve with this music. Thanks all!
  3. Hello! I do not know where to start. After long hesitation i decided to upload a song i composed, and seek for advices, what is good about it, what are the errors etc... and then hopefully i find where to start. When telling about errors, please only tell actual musical errors, not things that are a matter of taste. You can also point out those, but it's important to me to know actual musical errors, regardless of taste. The song i uploaded is called 'Fall to the Dark Side' , as all my works it is first written in Guitar Pro , then exported to MIDI. Then i record the MIDI using soundfont instrument banks, to aquire better sound. i know, it sounds still way too 'synthetic', but i know of no better ways right now, thats why im here. Also, i would like to expand my knowledge, how i can achieve correct sound, control dynamics of instruments and a whole lot of things. In short, how could my tracks become more professional. Excuse me if it is not the correct sub-forum, please move it then. I was also not sure about the style where to post it, i went with electronic since it's 100% synthetic. here is the song: godofpain.uw.hu/stuff/FalltotheDarkSide.mp3
  4. Wow, that's very great! What movies have you scored? Are there any tracks available for download?
  5. sorry if i was misunderstandeable. i know that SW and ST music are different, i just wanted to make my 2 favourite examples. Also, with Star trek i meant the soundtracks of the motion pictures, made by Jerry Goldsmith, and James Horner, and some others. They also use full live orchestra. And adoring the music of John Williams doesnt mean that i have visions of being as great as him. The fact that i would like to to make music similar to his style isnt ignorance in think. If it would be ignorant, then everyone who'd drive a car would be ignorant, cause he didin't get the talent of a car racing champion. EDIT: Eldeni, yes, of course i want to simulate orchestral sound on the computer. But i've heard tunes (even from this forum) that were created with the computer and sounded *very* nicely, and realistic. For example, do you know the soundtrack of the SW Fanfilm 'Revelations'? It has real orchestral sound, and was made with computer. And aquiring skills and knowledge about the orchestra - well this is, why i came to this forum for mostly.
  6. Hello! i am an enthusiastic sci-fi fanatic, who would like to be able to compose the kind of music You hear in Star Wars, Star Trek, and such. im using Guitar Pro for ~2 years now, and know the program in and out. Though, i found myself desiring to compose more of the cinematic kind of music, and i think i have reached the limits of Guitar Pro. After an bit of initial reading, i got my hands on Sibelius, though, i see it also uses General MIDI, so my sound won't be more orchestral, and im actually used to Guitar Pro so much that i find it easier to wirte music in it. What i would seek advice on is, 1. Do i need to learn Sibelius over Guitar Pro, can it do more/different things needed for orchestral movie music? 2. How could i make a piece sound more realistic? At the moment i have a DSP plugin that can use Soundfonts (soundcard in itself cannot), so i can make MIDI's sound better, but it's still not comparable anything you hear in a movie. On this site i heard some pieces that sound really awesome, almost like a real orchestra would be playing it, or a professional video game track. 3. Any generic suggestions whom i should consult, or which section of the forum i should go to if i want to dwell into writing movie music? Star Wars' music is my great idol heheh... i never learned music theory, but i can make harmonies and such in Guitar Pro by ear and visually. (actually so well, that a fellow GP user told me i should've learned music theory and instructing orchestras) So i would like to learn anything necessary to make cinematic music, in both composing, and making it sound right. Kind thanks in advance for all help!
