  1. Hello ! I'm working on a piece for baryton and viola da gamba and I'm thinking of a lot of questions and suggestions : 1) I wanted to take the traditional modal gregorian chant of "Ave Maris Stella " and use it by addind a tonal accompaignment realized by the viola da gamba but the questions I would like to have an answer for are : - Can we recognize the gregorian chant in the tonal part ? - The accompaignment by the viola, isn't it a little bit boring ? - The global structure of the piece, does it have some coherence ? - The modulations, aren't they a little abrupt ? You can also give all the suggestions and questions you want. I'll read them with pleasure ! William.
  2. Hi ! I would like to add some suggestions as a harpsichordist who is very fond of this style of music. As PeterthePapercomPoser said, the sound itself is the last part of the composition process I think. Concerning your piece, the sound is very good but before considering that characteristic, I think that you should pay more attention to the materials of the composition itself : for example, I have the impression that the rhythm and the melodie of each line seems to lack of coherence. Plus, if you consider the place of the semiquavers, they are placed on the 4th beat of the 2nd bar, which produces a little abrupt effect. Then, If you look the bass line at the 2nd bar, the passage from G to A, you make an avoided cadence which shouldn't be placed in the beginning of this piece, I think. You've got some very good ideas but in my opinion you should pay more attention to the composition before the sound. Besides, what material computer did you use to have sounds like that ? Thank you for sharing ! William.
  3. I like the mood and the aesthetic of your piece but I have the impression that the melodic lines lack of direction for my taste. I love the changes of the measure and the use of modal colours but maybe you could have insisted on this contrast by using different colours, different moods etc. Thank you for sharing ! William.
  4. This is a very good job, I think ! It's an interesting piece and I love the theme(s). As Tom Statler said, I think you could have added more modulations, E major for example. I heard and I saw on your score that you modulated in the "homonyme" C major : I think it's a very good idea which corresponds to the mood and the aesthetic of your piece but that passage is a litte too short for me. Last but not least, even though your piece is very structured, It was a little difficult for me to distinguish clearly the development of the first theme and what I think as a second theme? It's just my opinion. In any case, it's a good job. Thank you for sharing ! William.
  5. Thank you very much for your comments both of you ! I agree with you PeterthePapercomPoser concerning the "spirit of a partita" even though I thought of the spirit of a prelude rather than those of a partita when I composed this piece. Concerning those chords, The viola da gamba is fretted so as you said, the chords are easier to play than with any other string instrument. It has seven chords but I checked with the violist and there are some chords (not so many) that are impossible to be played so I hesitate between rewriting the part with a chords or turn the solo to a duet to keep all the chords I need.
  6. Hi ! I'm happy to share one of my works on that forum for the first time. It's a piece for solo viola da gamba which mix different langages. I tried to imagine what could be the sound of the caress of angels, so I hope you'll enjoy it. Thank you for listening and give me your feedback / analysis if you like ! Excuse me I realized that uploaded a wrong version ! This is the right version to listen to. Thanks !
