Alright, I really liked that. :D Just when I thought it couldn't get any classier I nearly died of high-class when I heard the chorus. If anything else, I think it'd sound great with some vocal harmony in the chorus. I'm not particularly pleased with the guitar solo but it certainly doesn't detract from the song, it just seems a bit... canned. :\ Incidentally enough, though, it (the piece as a whole) reminded me quite a bit of Steely Dan. But overall: I need to buy the bloody EP.

Thank you. :) Yeah, I am pretty reluctant to call it jazz anymore. After copious mulling, I think I've settled on progressive rock but WHO NEEDS GENRES, RIGHT? And I'm hoping I can do something cool with the drums when and if I ever get this thing recorded. My main problem is that when I'm doing such improv, I usually just get lazy and fall into really basic triplet patterns. But I'm sure after a bit o' rehearsing I'll crank out something classy. Oh, and you get about fifty-seven awesome points for the Bodhisattva reference. I was practically raised on Steely Dan. :w00t:

Ha, thanks. Likening it to ELP is probably one of the greater compliments I would have liked to receive concerning this. I'd really like to see it performed but good musicians are a bit hard to come by where I'm from; at best I seek to get a partial human recording with what's left made up with VSTs. Oddly enough; the organ, at least in the beginning, started as horns but I decided to change it later for reasons I'm not even sure I know. Notwithstanding; I do think I was a proper choice.

Thank you. :w00t: Yeah, again, a lot of this, drums and bass particularly, I hope to be largely improvised when and if I get around to recording this. I just like live improvisation and don't want to can it in a MIDI file. Problem is, good Double Bass players are hard to come by these days so I may end up having to sequence it. But I am indeed quite happy you liked it.

Drums are scraggy, I'll give you that. :D In this case it's more or less a placeholder though; I'm actually stupid enough to be trying to get a band together to play such pieces of mine. In the event that we get it recorded, I'll do something interesting on drums. I'm just too damned lazy to do it via MIDI. But I do like my blastbeats. And I was a bit apprehensive about the simplicity and lack of dynamics and, thence, the limited theme. :( But anything additional I added just fucked up the atmosphere. This will be amended, however, once I've actually learned a thing or two about composing. I am indeed glad you enjoyed it. :w00t:

As concerns the music in respects to the pictures; yeah I support the "slow it down" sentiment. Otherwise, I love it. It is, however, much more adventurous than the pictures would connote.

This thing started out as a pretty solid bebop piece, I swear. D: So I was supposed to write a jazz piece but got a bit frisky and this thing plopped out of me. I'm pretty damned proud of this one but it seems oddly incomplete. Nevertheless, it's pretty much the coolest thing I've ever done. Which isn't saying much at all. But this one time I built a waterslide in the freshman dorms; that was pretty cool. Anyway I'd like you to listen to both versions I provide if you're feeling frisky because I'm pretty sure I butchered the mix when I Cakewalk'd it. (Mainly because Cakewalk is bullshit and their representatives will vote for the presidential candidate whom you hate the most.) Anyway; problems to address with the MIDI file: 1) I used an Alto Sax way out of it's range. This is because I the sampling for my GM Soprano sax sounded terrible. Just pretend it's a soprano. 2) I'm pretty sure Music Creator 4, in all its glory, jacked up the volume and timing and tempo changes in the MIDI file so ignore anything stupid like that 3) The piano at the end will sound obnoxious. Just go with it. 3) The Bassline is needlessly loud. This is because I like it that way; it's not a mixing issue. I really just love bass. 'specially acoustic flavours. 4) I've never had a day of musical training in my life. The composition is amateur at best. :w00t: Anyway, I sincerely hope you enjoy it at least partially as much as I enjoyed making this bastard. ;) TELL ME YOUR THOUGHTS, CHILDREN! Also: it's supposed to sound like a vinyl in the beginning and end, don't freak out about the ominous noises. Death_in_retrospect.mid

I personally though it was a bit monotonous and melodically devoid; definitely didn't need to be 5:40. But, Oh holy scraggy, the Organ/Xylophone/Handbells were a nice touch!

DO IT! I've never tuned a piano before; I'm too white. Luckily my piano is a beast. I think we've had to tune it twice in my life.

Thanks. Yeah, being the amateur I am, proper harmonization isn't exactly second nature yet. :P But I'm certainly working on that. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "get further" but I think I've got the gist. As far as the climax; I didn't actually want a very overt "ending" to it but rather give it a feel like it's just fading out. I don't know what I'm talking about but, DAMN IT, it made sense before I tried to type it. Oh, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Remember when I sucked at composing? Oh, here, let me remind you. Anyway, I was lurking here again and happened across this. Reminded myself, thence, that I actually tried to do something like that. :D Self-depreciative jokes aside; I'm actually pretty proud of this piece. I know it's not great but I am a relatively new composer and without any (formal or otherwise) musical training. Therefore, I do feel this piece is a step in the right direction. (The right direction being the one that will lead me to become a tolerable and even moderately well-received musician.) So rip it apart and tell me what's up, 'kay? Also: I really do hope you like it. The mp3: Terrible, free VST, go! nocturne_5.mid

I'm going to be honest; I thought it was obnoxious. :D But, hell, it was pretty interesting and unique and actually pretty cool. You win five internets for actually writing something in a locrian scale that was tolerable.

I wrote a song about rain once. I called it "rainfall" because I'm just that creative. Main differences were that it was in B minor and it sucked. I'll upload load it just so you can mock my abilities as a composer. I really liked this. Like... REALLY. I liked it. I thought it was a bit long and the phrase around 3:52 sounded like a Disney movie rip but that's not necessarily a bad thing at all. The only really problem I had with it was that the ending was uneventful but perhaps it's for the better given it fits right in with the subtlety and inoffensiveness the piece quantitatively displays throughout. And IMHO; measure 27 was kickass. DON'T LET THEM FOOL YOU!

Romeo And Juliet, a metal Ballad
Johnny Fawkes replied to NoQuarter's topic in Jazz, Band, Pop, Rock
I actually kinda liked it. :D It was a bit generic, I must admit, but the meter kept me interested. You could stand to put another voice in there to kinda break the nondescriptness of the melody. Like a random horns-section sting or some synthesizer. Or perhaps just a lead guitar line but I like to keep a pretty noteworthy disparity between types of instrument in a song. Bottom line: I'd like to see more from the melody (before or during the point the vocals come in) just to keep it from being so bland. Otherwise, I though it was pretty damned spiffy. Also it'd be nice to see the bass do something different. It just emulates the guitar without doing anything really relevant. In the verse, try doing 16th notes straight-across on D and then doing some jazzy or otherwise obscure (but not violently dissonant) harmony in the second riff. AND MORE, that's just the first thing that came to mind. After the breakdown circa 2:00 I liked what the bass line did. In conclusion; get a goddamn band and record this bastard. NOW.
