Thanks all, I actually mixed this myself using various sample libraries; I did however have this read (and recorded) by my college orchestra, but it was a little on the difficult side for them to sight-read (and thus the recording was not a great representation of the piece).

  4. Hey all, I've been working on this piece for a while, and finally got around to putting a (very) rough sketch of it in Finale. Just looking for feedback/comments/suggestions...so far it is only about 20 or so seconds worth of music but I'm planning on the piece being at least 6 minutes if not longer. Here's the wav file (from Finale 2010): flight.wav I'd be happy to upload the score if people are interested. -Ken
  5. Hey all, I'm having trouble figuring out how to make tuned harp glissandos--that is, those which show the tuning of the glissando itself. In Finale, I would usually input the notes of the harp's "scale" in 32nd notes, extend the beam/hide the rests, and make the gliss; this created notationally correct harp glissandos that also (for the most part) play back correctly. How can I achieve this in Sibelius? Thanks for your help, Ken
  6. I'm attaching the copy of the score that I put together when I had this piece read by the orchestra. It's not perfect; I'm planning on reformatting the score, but everything should be there. Thanks for all of the great feedback! PROLOGUE.mus.pdf
  7. haha it will be; I'm hoping to make this the first movement of a 5/6 movement work.
  8. Hey all, I first "wrote" this piece a while back; in fact, you can find an older version of it somewhere on here. Anyway, I had the opportunity to get a piece read by my college orchestra this past semester, and took the opportunity to re-orchestrate the piece I had written into something much less...empty. Here are the results: Prologue.mp3 - File Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage Note: This is NOT my school orchestra playing; I spent about a month or so working on this mockup. I'd love to receive any feedback one might have, on both my writing and the mix. I do have a score, but it needs a little cleaning up, so I will post it soon. Thanks, and enjoy! -Ken
  9. Thanks!! And yes I know...I'm absolutely terrible at giving my pieces titles. Does anyone have a name that would be more appropriate?
  10. Thank you very much for your comments...they're very helpful!! This actually was supposed to be performed live a week ago, but I wasn't able to get an oboe player. Luckily all of the players have agreed to perform it next semester!
  11. Hey all, I recently finished this piece, "Of Love and Loss," for woodwind quintet and string quartet. I would love to get any feedback anyone has!! mp3: Of Love and Loss.mp3 -Ken FINAL DRAFT.pdf
  12. ...any more? So far we have a river/water-based name and titty land.
  13. Hey everyone, I've been working on this piece off-and-on for about a year now, and I'm finally getting around to completing it. The only problem is I still do not have a title for the work. Although I would not be too upset to let it share the fate of my other works--that is, to receive a generic, one-word title--but I'd like to see what other people think. What would you title my work? Or what emotions does it evoke in you? Does it remind you of anything? Any help would be great, as would be any comments regarding the musicality and structure of the piece itself. I'm attaching a link to an mp3 and a pdf score...and keep in mind that the work is not finished yet, although the major themes are generally in place. Untitled Piece (mp3) Thanks everyone!! -Ken sm_ens unfinished.pdf
  14. Currently? Hmmm, that's a tough one...as of now I'd have to put my favorite piece as Symphony No. 2 "Romantic" by Howard Hanson. The way the melodies and orchestral textures flow in and out of the various movements still amazes me, and the raw emotional content of the score is very powerful; no wonder John Williams based (and I use that term loosely) his "Adventures on Earth" from E.T. on the final movement of this symphony. But, then again, tastes change, favorites come and go...and I've been on a real Philip Glass kick lately. Rescore of the 1933 Dracula, anyone? Check it out.
  15. I agree it is rather short; I wrote it to be performed in a class and could not have written it to be any longer, but I am highly considering expanding it (just not sure exactly how I want to approach it yet.) In regards to the tremolos: the effect I was going for is simply a tremolo-like movement between all three notes, almost as if one was rolling the chord repeatedly (thus, making it very easy to play and not sacrificing any notes). My problem with that was notation--I would personally notate that as three separate whole notes with tremolo indications between all three, but I was unable to do so in Finale. (When it was performed, I made sure the piano player knew what I meant by the tremolo markings). Any suggestions on how to notate this so it is clearer to the performer?
