  1. Ah yes, I remember those things! I never took part in any of them. :P I could suggest: modulating, varying the counterpoint, and perhaps a little development on the main theme. Also less repetition and more harmonic content. You can add some chords in some of the phrases that you repeat, increase rhythmic contrast... Actually I can edit your file if you don't mind. In this form it's a bit boring, I'll have to admit, but for a school party it's very fitting. That's what your teachers would expect you to do I suppose. Of course I don't know how capable your friends are, so maybe this is all you can do with the available material. :(
  2. Well. I don't agree. These are simple pieces with no great pretensions, isn't that obvious? As such, I think they've deficiencies but are otherwise fine, especially for a beginner (just think about the endings, for example). but I've seen way worse samples composed by people with teachers... Obviously, lots of study and practice is in order for you. The question is whether you want to compose commonplace, simple pieces or not? If you have an aspiration to write something that's serious and meaningful, you've got a lot to do. That's my comment for you.
  3. Wagner...? I think Wagner was quite a bit like Schoenberg. Both were I think very intelligent people, but were also arrogant. Some of Wagner's music I think is very good. But they get drowned out among the mediocre stuff that he created while trying to build "monumental masterpieces" of musical history...Ah, and his repetitions, repetitions....... I agree that Beethoven's ninth is the best of them all. In terms of its gravity, (I mean intellectual weight), apart from creativity, esthetics etc, it's unequalled in the whole of music. And I actually am not a Beethoven enthusiast. Also I must say that I'm in principle a little opposed to such characterisations as best opera, symphony etc.Fort instance, where do you put Guillaume de Machaut among all these people? Or Scarlatti, with his works for the keyboard? There's so much tenderness and emotion in some of his works, in a very personal, characteristically Spanish way... Can one compare Chopin's preludes with those of Bach? There are many criteria for judging a work. Esthetics, intellectual depth, emotional intensity, technical skill, complexity (for better or worse), comes to mind at once. But there's something else that's very badly neglected too. I personally believe that it's beyond absurd to compare, for instance, Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, and say Palestrina, or Machaut..The works of these people are so different so completely apart from each other not only in their technical aspects, but also in meaning and intent that, in my humble opinion, it's utterly frivolous to say something like, "Mozart's Requiem's better than Bach's Mass, which's better than Machaut's Mass de Notre Dame"...etc. Can we really compare simplicity and complexity for example? Can we compare Renaissance music with Baroque? Isn't good music ultimately tied strongly to its creators character and personality? Can one compare Beethoven's revolutionary fervour, (French revolution inspired I mean), with the religiosity of Bach? And so I don't compare them myself. They're different. Everyone has his preference based on his taste. I wonder what you people think on this..
  4. http://icking-music-archive.org/ByComposer.php Well, this place has hundreds of sheet music by lots of composers. Perhaps you're aware of it. I thought I should post however. Regards
  5. Amazing! I'd thought to myself "sure this individual's parents are American or English...". You obviously are very talented. Nice to meet you! ;) I know eleven languages, (or more, depending on how you count them..). But I'm older than you.
  6. All right, you'd reviewed me remember? :) Your little piece is really quite good. But there's no ending. Even though there's more than one idea here, I think their flow is natural, which is great. But aren't some parts too loud? Perhaps it's the midi. I suggest that you develop it further. The theme's not bad at all. And while your ideas about randomness work very well here, I hope you won't take that to excess. This is a very nice beginning. And by the way, how come's your English so good?
  7. Comments arrive rather fast here. I'm not a pianist. In fact composing is something I've got into only very recently, and although I'm trying to extricate myself from its grip, I'm so far unable to do so. That's why my name's temporary. I'm very well aware that my work's way below the standards of this place. I apologise for the incoherence of my works, but I hope I'd given enough warnings. As for my style, there probably isn't much of a style, as I'm only trying to find out what is reasonable and what's not with regard to my own musical tastes. And I'll try to make good use of your suggestions. Thank you very much for your time. :)
  8. It's rather nice to see so many people here working to create beauty. My problem is whatever I write, I'm never satisfied in the least degree. I've never had any satisfaction in any of my works to date. And since I never share them with anyone, I decided that perhaps by posting them here I might receive some comments that might help me in deciding what I should do. I don't have a romantic approach to music. I'm posting two samples of my work that I wrote in the last week. They're both incomplete. First one's the first two movements of a piano concerto that I was writing untill the day before the new year. In total 7:30. The second is a single movement piece for the piano, which was only half complete on the same day. Lasts a little more than four minutes. The concerto needs a little elaboration before measure 11. The slow movement begins at measure 120. Concerto2's a work that I decided to discard after the first movement. It sounds jazzy I think. And a little dull and unintelligent. Thanks for reading and listening. I'd be happy to receive advice. And sorry for this strange message.
