汶川大地震發生於北京時間（UTC 8）2008年5月12日14時28分04.1秒，震央位於中國四川省阿壩藏族羌族自治州汶川縣映秀鎮附近、四川省省會成都市西北偏西方向79公里處。根據中國地震局的數據，此次地震的面波震級達8.0Ms、矩震級達8.3Mw（根據美國地質調查局的數據，矩震級達到了7.9Mw），破壞地區超過10萬平方公里。地震烈度可能達到11度。地震波及大半個中國及多個亞洲國家和地區。北至北京，東至上海，南至香港、澳門、台灣、泰國、越南，西至巴基斯坦均有震感。
截至2008年9月18日12時，汶川大地震共造成69227人死亡，是中華人民共和國成立以來破壞力最大的地震，也是唐山大地震後傷亡最慘重的一次。地震造成四川、甘肅、陝西等省的災區直接經濟損失共8451億元人民幣，災區的衛生、住房、校舍、通訊、交通、治安、地貌、水利、生態、少數民族文化等方面受到嚴重破壞。地震災情引起民間強烈迴響，全中國以至全球紛紛捐款，累積捐款額超過500億元人民幣。中國軍方調動了和平時代以來規模最龐大的隊伍進行救災]，中國民間的大批志願者和來自中國各地以及世界各國的專業人道救援隊伍也加入救災。震後中國政府宣布投入一萬億元人民幣、用三年時間進行地震災區的重建工作，計劃在2010年基本實現目標
