  1. Dr.Pangloss, I realize what you are saying. I never meant to insult anyone or treat lyrics as a necessary evil. I was just presenting something I had from a while ago that I thought wasn't that bad musically. I'm sorry if the way I said things seems to degrade lyricists in any way, but thats not what I intended in doing. However, I'll change the post since you pointed that out.
  2. ok only I have no intentions in doing anything with this haha. I wrote it for fun and it probably won't go anywhere beyond this forum. I can't believe I forgot to write that down in my first post. Yes, they are all male voices, and I tried for a while to write lyrics for them but none of the ones I wrote seemed to fit well.
  3. glazunov and skrjabin... vivaldi haha
  4. what the hell seraphim I was looking at the first few pages of posts... are J.Br. and I alone? Tchaikovsky's violin concertos my favorite.. :/ but as for Symphonies I like Skrjabin's 2nd Symphony the most
  5. thanks, yeah I was trying to get my head around not using 16th notes there, but it didn't seem to work when I made the 8th notes and quarter notes... maybe I'll try something else sometime. I agree it could be more melodic, but I focused on working on one theme, starting another then and returning to the first, since I had a hard time with that with my previous pieces.
  6. mm I like both pieces, although I like 148 substantially better than 144. Love how you use the strings section effectively, I could never do that. Great ending to 148 too
  7. a simple a capella piece I wrote for four male voices a while ago. Its very short so it won't be a long listen, I promise http://yshimizu.googlepages.com/rockapellaskank.mp3 enjoy the score is attached, and yes there are no lyrics, since I'm a terrible lyricist. If anyone has suggestions for lyrics, they're all welcome :) rockapella skank.pdf
  8. Yes, I see the key changes. Just a personal opinion, they occur too seldom, and they are some of the changes used most frequently when modulating music (at least I do, don't know about others), full step ups and downs, and fourths up and down. There may be exceptions that I missed but thats generally what I came up with. The original theme is the one you had in the beginning, and I know you come back to it, but it doesn't have to be too similar, you could start off with the same interval and trail off into something else, keeping the original feeling though. Sorry if that wasn't clear the first time. What software did you compose this in? If its anything compatible to my archaic finale 2006 I'll see if I can add things to this piece to show you what I mean. Only I'm leaving to the US soon so I might not have time to edit it until I come back. I think the middle piano section is fine, if shortened a little bit. I'd like to see someone play that interval at measure 169 :P Looks like this piece is going to yield you a lot good in the long run :)
  9. Unfortunately I'm going to have to go by what Justin pointed out.. I felt the same way as he did, maybe not as bad about it but I certainly saw many areas where you could introduce ideas. You could come back to your original theme later on in the piece, or you could keep the same theme and introduce a new key, adopt a new time signature or something. I liked your theme though, but too much repetition doesn't work for anything i guess.
  10. I hate the midi playback too haha. Bandstand wouldn't play it for some reason so I had to go with that. thanks for the comment though, and the midi file is attached  harinezumi.MID
  11. thats an awesome recording, its great to hear a live recording rather then something played off a midi file. you took and developed your ideas very well, the 8 minutes of the first movement seemed to pass like 2. keep me posted on your compositions!
  12. mmm like dorfischer said, i don't understand atonal music that well either but i hear a lot of good ideas there. definately good things i could learn from like learning to explore new harmonies and combinations. good work :) i guess some parts could develop more, maybe include a section where everything is organized to provide contrast to the rest of the piece.
  13. a short piece for a string octet composed in a few days, 4 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos. I don't know if I did it well or not but I tried not to deviate too far from one theme. I guess I could have worked each idea further, but I'm not good enough to do that yet hahaha http://yshimizu.googlepages.com/harinezumi.mp3 cheers harinezumi.pdf
