  1. thanks. I will definately do that.
  2. Hi. I have this really big problem. I can write some really nice sounding music but it can take me days to think of even how just a few lines should sound. I have a very high standerd of quality so any old melody wont do. It has to be something memorable. today, I layed down to take a nap and right as I was about to fall asleep, I started hearing my bass clarinet concerto in my head. I heard the entire thing. I have only just started writing it and the whole thing suddenly popped into my head. I have read how mozart could hear entire pieces in his head before he wrote them. I think this was the same thing. the only problem is that after I woke up, I could hardly remember any of it. So what do I do? the whole concerto is finished. the only problem is that I can't remember how it sounds.
  3. thank all of you for replying. I have played the bass clarinet for almost 7 years so I know its capabities. It can play pretty loud but it gets competely drowned out in my band because of the extremely large trumpet section. a bass clarinet cannot compete with 20 trumpets, especially in its lower range. but I think I have this figured out.
  4. Oh and thanks for readng my message. I really apprecieate it.
  5. Hello fellow composers! I haven't posted here in a while but anyway, I am writing a short concertino for me and my friend who both play bass clarinet. It will be played with a large symphonic band. So I have a couple of questions maybe you guys (particularly those of you who write concertos) could answer: 1. The bass clarinet is not an especially loud instrument so how do I make sure it doesn't get drowned out in a large band with a particularly large brass section? Should I give most of the instruments lots of rests or should I give everyone PP for most of the piece? 2. Do you guys have any other tips for someone who has never written a concerto? I am aiming for something similar to vivaldi except with a few more modern twists. Thats all I can think of for now.

    2 crappy pieces

see that's the problem. I have no trouble writting the beginning of a piece but I usually run out of ideas after a few measures. Do you have any tips on how you manage to come up with several minutes of music? Is alot of it just repeating sections and going back to earlier sections? What should I do for the main development? thanks. -end of message

    2 crappy pieces

Im guessing this means I should just give up at composing...Im a failure at everything.

    2 crappy pieces

While I am at it, I found 3 other fragments of pieces I wrote for clarinet a while ago. these are more atonal and might be different versions of the same piece (I can't remember). If I was going to continue i would probably combine them into one piece since they are similer. what do you think of these? 9. these are my first 2 pieces that are worth showing someone. I know that they really kind of suck but Im proud of myself anyway. please tell me what you think. crappy piece one is a duet I was going to write in the style of mozart but it didn't really end up that way...I don't really know what instrument is it best on. the crazy piece is a clarinet quartet that I can't finish because I am totally out of ideas on how to expand it. I think the beginning is actually pretty good but I have no idea how to make it into a whole piece. I was trying to make it so that the bass clarinet was "first clarinet" because bass clarinet usually get really crappy parts. Tell me what you think. How would you improve these pieces? Thanks. 10. thank you. I think I understand what you mean.
  11. thank you all for your timely replies.
  12. okay hi guys. im new here. i play the clarinet and i have tryed composing a few ensemble pieces before but never really finished any of them. I think it was just too much to manage. now ive decided im going to write a piece just for solo clarinet similer to the cappricios for violin by paganini. im sure you are all familiar with those pieces. so my question is this: for a solo piece like this obviously i cant have actual chords but should i worry about having alot of chord progressions in the music or should i mainly focus on just the melody line and not really try to figure out how to fit it into a chord progression. if anyone wrote a solo piece how did you compose it? how do you think the cappricios were composed? thank you for your help.
