  1. Greg Smith... I apologize if I've affended you. I just thought this was a place where many people of the same interest could share ideas and opinions without being ridiculed for those ideas and opinions. I never said I was a genius. Trust me... I'm not! But if an orchestra loaded up on stage and simply played one chord that lasted two seconds then exited the stage, would you get anything from that? I'd be a bit confused, personally.
  2. For me it's kind of strang. I always try to write something each day. I normally start with chords. If it's working I go into a "trance-like state" and I write for hours... Then I step back and look at whats on the page and say: "How the hell did that get there?" I had my "world premier" several weeks ago. My first composition was publicly performed by my local orchestral. I directed...:D
  3. Well... I believe that music can generate certain emotions and feelings in people. But an A minor chord is always going to be just that. It's just a chord. In order to "generate" emotion you need to focus of the chord progression. One chord ain't gonna do it. Everyone here is right. Music is a lot like literature. It can be interpreted in any way the listener wants to. But to say that music can't generate emotions is pretty extreme. Personally I don't like a lot of music because they do nothing to me. There is music, however, that moves me BIG TIME! Sometimes it may take me several times to listen to a piece before I "feel" anything. Personally, soundtracks do the trick. (Some soundtracks I haven't even seen the movie to. James Newton Howard... Listen to some of his work I bet you will be moved!
  4. Oh! Maybe that's what you are talking about! The sound you're getting is the "side" drum. 1. Click your Staff tool. 2. Double click the staff that you are struggling with. 3. Where is says "notation style" click the select button. 4. Basic Orch Percussion should be highlighted. 5. Hit "edit". 6. Then adjust your percussion mapping. You can totally turn the "side drum" off if do not need it or you can just move it somewhere else. Hope this helps!
  5. GAAAH! My computer is absolutely garbage! I'm using Finale 2007 (or trying to) with Garritan Personal Orchestra 2.0 Finale Edition and my computer struggles with it! During playback the music begins to skip like a broken record and I get an error message saying that the program needs to close... Someone told me this was a soundcard issue. Do I need a new sound card? Do I need to update my drivers? I can't afford a new computer... I read somewere that SoundMAX Digital Audio doesn't support ASIO (whatever that is)... Can someone please explain to me what all this is and how I can get Finale running smoothly on my piece of junk computer? Any help is largly appreciated.
  6. Is the sound choppy and uneven? I've had choppiness and uneveness using Finale 2007 with GPO Finale Edition and it frustrates me so much. I think my computer is garbage though. If I minimize the document during playback it plays much better.
  7. Mr. Composer Guy! I'm sixteen too. I've wanted to compose since I saw the movie Signs and heard James Newton Howard's amazing work with scoring the movie. That was almost seven years ago. Since then I've been composing and my highschool band director actually asked me to re-arrange our fight song! I actually just had one of my orchestral compositions publically performed by my community orchestra. But I'm still extremely intimidated too! I play violin but I'll never become a virtuoso as I hope so. I don't even know how I'll get into a good music college with a terrible audition. I'd suggest getting some music notation softwhere if you are writing with pen and paper. You have loads of options and I've learned a lot using Finale. (I applaud you if you are using pen and paper. I don't know how people wrote orchestral scores without music notation software back in the day!) Experiment with other instruments. Borrow them from your school. If you're writing for orchestra knowing a little bit of each instrument is a huge plus. I've been told that I have plenty of time (you do too) and just go with the flow! If music is what you love then your passion will get you where you want to be!
  8. I have a french horn friend. I think most horns are in 'F' with the Bb thumb valve. She says that she uses the 'F' fingerings for notes up to the second space A, and uses the Bb fingerings with anything above that. I'm not sure but I think the Bb fingerings are the same as the Bb trumpets.
  9. Hello all! I'm writing for full orchestra and I need some help. I always hear some awesome sounds coming from brass instruments but I don't know how to write what I hear properly. I play violin and have very little experience to brass instruments. Any help is greatly appreciated! French Horn "Elephant" Call There is a distinct first note and a distinct final note. There are bunch of little notes in between. It's almost like a glissando but it isn't 100% smooth. I normally hear them 'swooping' up in fifths. (I'm sure I sound retarded.) I'm using Finale 2007 and I have no clue how to write it. Trombone "Blasts" I'm a huge fan of the Signs soundtrack! The trombones play a low 'F' that crescendoes into a crisp 'brassy' attack. It's loud and aggressive and I don't know if this is a specific technique that I actually have to suggest in the score or if I simply just use a "sfz". My high school band director normally tells our brass section not to "blast". Maybe this is the same thing? How would I write this? French Horn Muting and Stopping Is there special terminloogy for these that I need to know? Can I just write 'Muted' or 'Stopped'?
  10. Hello everyone. I'm no computer wiz or anything so this may actually be a very simple issue. I need serious help! I have Finale 2007c on Windows XP. When I use GPO 2.0 I get an error message saying that Finale has had a problem and it needs to close. Most of the time it happens on playback but other times I could be plugging in some articulation and this message pops up. During playback the song begins to repeat like a broken record until I click 'debug', ' send' or 'don't send'... This is very annoying! I've contacted technical support but nothing seemed to work! I don't know what the problem could be. Writing becomes so frustrating when I have to exit out every five minutes because of this error. Sometimes it does pretty well. Other times I could by loading my libraries and the message comes up. It only happens with GPO 2.0... Any advice?
