  1. I'll make my grand return to the forums by uploading a recent work of mine. I just started studying composition in college, and I thought that for my first project I'd do something outside of my traditional workspace. I usually write for solo piano or string quartet, so doing soprano saxophone is something I'm pretty unused to. The technique I tried to explore a bit was playing into a baby grand piano with the damper down to vibrate strings and have them vibrate underneath me. It didn't work as perfectly as I had hoped, but I think was interesting nonetheless. I wouldn't consider it a finished work by any means, but it did have a looming due date so I pushed out out the door a bit preemptively. I'd like to explore some motifs a bit more than I did. The recording of me playing it is a bit messy, and I apologize for that. It was a long day for me :) In addition, an apology for the handwritten score. I just figured it'd be a pain to put it all on Finale and make it the way I wanted it. Any comments/feedback would be wonderful :) Bagatelle No 7 for Soprano Saxophone Also, I know the name is lame but I'm unimaginative. Suggestions? bagatelle no 7.pdf
  2. Alright, just for those of you that were wondering, the other nominees were Don Byron's "Seven Etudes for Solo Piano," and Harold Meltzer's "Brion." And keep in mind that the winner must be American and the piece must have been premiered in the past year. So those of of you suggesting Reich didn't deserve it, who do you think did?
  3. Just thought that (for those of you that don't know) the Pulitzer for music was given today. The recipient was Steve Reich and his piece 'Double Sextet.' Personally, from the clip on NPR ( Steve Reich Wins Music Pulitzer : NPR Music ) I think it's phenomenal and well-deserving of such an honor. Give it a listen, and say what you think!
  4. very much for the thoughts. I think I will look at some Bach quartets, now that you mention it. I really didn't have any main themes or thoughts when writing this; I just heard it and let it go onto paper. :P
  5. I've been asked to prepare a cello quartet for an upcoming concert, and finally got a start on it, made some decent progress... But now I'm stumped. Any suggestions on what to do with it? As always, other criticism on it is more than welcome. Or, if it's just a terrible start, please let me know rather than embarrassing myself when it comes concert time. Thanks so much! Jake Uploaded: .mus and .mid cellicm.MUS cellicm.MID
  6. Wow. Very nice, quite well orchestrated. Particularly liked 4:05. Keep it up!
  7. I'm with Amir on this one. It's a great piece, I love the shift a little after 1:00, and it's got some great rhythmic harmonies, but a title change is, in my opinion, in order ;)
  8. Here's a cello quartet I wrote a couple months ago. I didn't really develop an overriding theme, just sort of threw some parts together. It actually started as a piano piece that I decided would work much better with different instrumentation. Please let me know what you think and give any feedback you have. If you have any suggestions, please let me know; I'm considering submitting this as a college conservatory entrance piece. I've included the .mus and the .mid. Thanks! Jake PS I know the name is rubbish, if you can think of a good one, please lemme know! cellifinal.MUS cellifinal.MID
  9. Aww, man. I came hoping for a laugh but was impressed. Sounds really good. Keep it up!
