  1. If you don't have the opportunity to pick up one of the instruments and get to know them a little more intimately, have a look at what my buddy Samuel has to say on writing for woodwinds. If you don't have it already, I highly recommend this book if you're going to write for orchestra. http://www.scribd.com/doc/129586059/The-Study-of-Orchestration-3rd-Edition-by-Samuel-Adler#scribd
  2. Things go too slowly around here. Working on a new piece and many iterations of notation. Anyone have a recommendation for your favorite advanced piano notation book?

My favorite general notation book is "Behind Bars" by Gould. It has a good index. Which is important since it's about 800 pages of goodness with clear examples.

      Gracias. I'll check it out.

  3. Notating old works. Might have one ready to post in a wek or two.

      its about time.

  4. Anyone know of a correct way to notate these measures? What I'm trying to make clear is that the half note and two eighth notes in the bottom staff is its own voice. But is that even necessary? Is it more correct to notate a dotted half in the bottom staff and pull the two sixteenth notes down into it? I haven't been able to find a example of this particular situation in other piano music, so piano players, what would be the most clear or easiest to read for you? Advice / examples / links / references? Condescension.pdf
  5. I'm glad you kept going with it. Sometimes it's better to ignore the rules and not hamper creativity. Especially if you care more about the end product and less about winning a contest.
  6. I figured you knew what you were doing so I didn't hold back much :D It's a lot of music to go over with a fine-toothed comb. Especially when it's only worth 15 of 100 points.
  7. Rejoice fellow composers, my judgments are in two days early from the posting deadline. That means we should have a winner announced tonight, right?
  8. Oh relax. :jedi: :sith: I mistakenly thought I had until the 10th to judge, but I see now I have until the 9th. Aniolel, when I say I'll get them to you by the 10th and you respond only with "okies", perhaps that should have been the time you correct me about the deadline instead of waiting until yesterday afternoon. Regardless, today is the 8th. I have a very busy life, I'll spare you the details--unless you want them--and I'm not online all the time, so I apologize for the lack of communication. However. Rushing a judge to finish only detracts from the quality time and attention spent on each contestant's entry. I am nearly finished so keep your pants on . I am trying to give this last entry the same quality attention as the others. Edit: Where is this rush to post scores early coming from anyway?
  9. I'm still available. I said I'd be here in October to judge.
  10. I have to withdraw my offer to judge. I'll be on vacation the entire judging period.
  11. Congratulations everyone, what a large yield of good music!
