  1. RavingSpleen (and impresario): Thanks very much for taking the time to comment. I understand your point about the harmony not being vertical enough: that may be partly an influence from Celtic music, in which the parts, where they occur as separate voices, tend to be distinctly horizontal. I
  2. I wrote this medieval- or renaissance-style piece this afternoon partly as an exercise in four part harmony. I've had no formal training in this area--in fact very little training in harmony at all--so I'd appreciate critical comments, particularly from anyone who understands four part harmony. Thanks for listening. Medieval Ballad (recorder).mid Medieval Ballad (French Horn).mid Medieval Ballad.pdf
  3. Nice picking again!
  4. Thanks for the comments and tips, Oscar. I think you're right about the ornamentation; I'll try introducing it a bit more subtly.
  5. Thanks, Oscar. I like the rich, mellow tone. Nice playing, too. I'm only vaguely familiar with the Ibanez series--I think Tony McManus, the renowned Scottish fingerstylist, plays one on a recent recording.
  6. Nice. Did you compose this on an ordinary nylon string guitar?
  7. The following piece is an original melody in the celtic style, with harmony and counterpoint, on (primarily) flute, violin, cello and bass. As midi files can vary quite dramatically when played on different computers, I've uploaded an mp3 file instead. In one or two sections, where several voices are combining at once, the audio becomes a little choppy. The score isn't very presentable--I wrote it with a guitar program, so it is an octave too high--but I've included it anyway. Any comments or criticisms would be very much appreciated. Here is the mp3. Gailleann nan sliabh (The Mountain Storm).pdf
