  1. Once again, thanks for taking the time to look through these. :) Yeah, the melody in the first exercise wasn't the greatest. You compared it to the melody in the second one of this post (#3) though, which I don't understand because that was the melody you had posted and had us write a bass line for, haha. In any case, there was a wrong note in the MIDI file and I updated that. In any case, I wonder if I'm "ready" to go on to the other species. 2. Were you listening to some Final Fantasy? :P I'm new here, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I want to say I enjoyed your piece, but it really should have been more developed! Not simply length wise, but melodically. You have some good ideas, but they seem quite disjointed. I didn't really sense that were was much reference to older melodies in the piece, and really the only similarity between them is style. I would think in a piece like this a sense of familiarity is important, and that's something I would suggest could be improved upon. I don't know how exactly to improve this either, but I didn't know the end was coming. Sometimes that's really cool or appropriate, but with this piece it just felt unsatisfying. Maybe a ritardando could help, or simply a restatement of the original melody. Oh, and add dynamics. ;)
  3. Ah sorry guys, my chord writing isn't the greatest. I've never taken much theory, it's mostly figuring stuff out for me. What I meant to say was: eg. D major chord... then BAM C major. or D minor then C major. If I was to describe it it's basically like there is resolution and a sense of finality to the initial chord, but then the unexpected (or expected in my case haha) drop down a whole step is really pleasing and creates an even greater sense of leading towards something. That's my made-up theory for the day.
  4. Okay thanks composerorganist... I tried a new cantus firmus for the first exercise and labeled the intervals now. I also did the second exercise you mentioned in this thread. 5. PDF mp3 Alright, this is the first piece I have finished in years. I finished it last month, and have been meaning to come back and revise it. However I didn't get around to it, and unfortunately the score file was corrupted (do NOT save a score only on your flash drive haha). Obviously it will take a substantial amount of time to rewrite the entire piece, so I want to take this opportunity to put out what I had and get some feedback on it. Notes: About halfway through the piece I decided to base it on a dream (more like nightmare) I had a bit before I started the writing process. It's always nice (especially for performers) to have meaning behind a work, and so of course if this were to be performed I would write up some composer's notes. Also, I know there are some messy parts in the score. When I revise this I will fix them, but if there's anything particular to piano notation (I've never been taught classical piano) that could be improved upon or changed please mention it (so, things like the "maestosorit" are obvious things for me to fix, but something like hand designation or pedal markings are something I don't know a ton about). I apologize for ugly watermark on the first page: like I said I couldn't edit the orignal, but I didn't want to have my full name on it right now (it's a pretty unique name) so... drastic measures. :/ Thanks YC for any comments and suggestions, and I hope someone enjoys it. :)
  6. I almost always will go (I believe this these are the correct symbols) i - VII or I - VII Somewhere. It's a terrible habit, but it mostly comes up in improvising. Huge sweeping romantic gestures for five minutes all over D major... then... C MAJOR CHORD. It's all good fun though.
  7. Just to give a bit more insight into terminology Gijs, "synthetic" is not the correct term. In regards to audio synthesis, the term you would want to use to reduce confusion would be "synthesized." eg. "I found a company that sells synthesized strings." Synthetic has the connotation that the thing one is talking about is unnatural, or man made. While this sort of makes sense in this context, "synthesized" makes much more sense. /dictionary post
  8. Alright I hope I'm not horribly out of place for doing this. I tried to make something that would enjoy listening to, something pleasant yet still (somewhat) endearing. Can't wait to see what I can do to improve. :) 16thCenturyCounterpoint_1stSpeciesPrimer.mid 16thCenturyCounterpoint_1stSpeciesPrimer_page.pdf
