  1. Hiya So, I'm not very good at development and such; my older compositions were pretty much me barraging the listener with new themes. In this string quartet I tried really hard to not introduce very many themes and also develop the themes when they reoccurred. Please give me some suggestions for how to improve the first movement before I try to write a second. Thanks, Sam 1.wav 1.pdf
  2. Oh... Um... I knew that... Actually i didn't notice... Oh and Thomas, try Imslp.org. There is a lot of music there, some (but not enough!) is for cello.
  3. It isn't too high. It is just kinda annoying :P As long as it isn't some random jump up to that note it should be fine. (as written)
  4. I always wanted to play flute because my grandpa did, but I didn't have the lung capacity or something. So I played cello because I actually was decent at it.
  5. Age: 17 (from March 11, 2010) Age of first up-close 'cello experience: 8 Year of first performance, if applicable: 10? Make (Brand, construction company): Rambeaux (Makers count right?) Vintage (year of construction or purchase): It says 1853 on the sticker inside Anecdotes, experiences, and particular praises or criticisms of the instrument: Um... I like the warm, dark tones of the low register of the cello. I also like the ethereal shimmer of the D string played in about 8th position(i don't think of positions in numbers) I dunno what else to say :/
  6. My cello teacher has me play in tune, but not dead. Meaning that the notes that could pull at the heartstrings are exaggerated so that they rip the heartstrings to shreds. But if you play the note too differently from the normal frequency it becomes out of tune... so yeah... I think it works, but it should be used in moderation.
  7. Two for me. First was a few years ago for BYSO. The admissions head was a former teacher of mine who never showed up to rehearsal (prompting a complaint to her boss from my mom and me). She told me that it was my turn by saying, "Sam, you've grown so much!". I didn't get in. Second was last year at senior districts. Before my audition the judge was talking to me and she asked about my cello, so I told her about it, and then she proceded to talk about my eyes... it was very strange. She told me that they were very pretty and that my mother should be happy. I didn't get in. Yeah... story of my life. "You have pretty eyes... wait, you think you can actually play?"
  8. It's a nice composition, but as a cellist I can pretty surely say that the solo part is rather simple and it doesn't sound very challenging (other than the super fast part). Nor does your piece exploit the strong points of the cello as a musical instrument such as the warm, dark, low register. And a word about the orchestral part; most of the entrances sound the same to me which would be fine, but the repetition is so cheerful that it gets kind of irritating.
  9. Trio that I wrote when a friend told me about a video she was making of birds. Flute Trio No. 1 "Birds' Awakening"
  10. Piano Sonata No. 1 Piano Sonata No. 1
  11. Piano Concerto in B minor. Piano Concerto No. 1
  12. Thanks, I will do my best.
  13. Thanks, do you have any suggestions or specific spots that you thought needed the most work?
  14. I started this AGES ago, and every once and a while I pick it up again and change it. But it sounds rather clunky to me, and I don't really know what to do. What are your thoughts? http://www.box.net/shared/bu7ah0zp2p (Sorry about the bad sound quality, and also sorry about the cymbal, for some reason my Sibelius makes a gong sound like a cymbal...)
