Peace Within the Machine (Concert Version)
KingCrimson replied to KingCrimson's topic in Piano Music, Solo Keyboard
Thanks for the comments, yeah if I had had more time the piece would have been developed more, but it was for a class, so yeah I am leaving it as is. -
Yeah the players are students (along with our professor on piano)... the score is accurate, it's just that the players did make a couple mistakes (to be honest though, I rather like the mistake where the cello and piano get off rhythm near the end of the arpeggio section, it gives it this cool, perhaps "Reichian", rippling effect). I looked up Christopher Norton, he seems like a rather interesting musical entity, I'll have to hear some of his music. If I would share one more thing, it would I suppose be the little concept that I thought of after writing the piece (which I only put on the MIDI version of the piece and not this one, as this time I wanted to see what people would think without having a preconceived idea of what the piece was going to be like... so if you'd like to read the story I came up with for it, look under my pieces for the non-concert version of this piece), it doesn't necessarily relate to each part of the music in a distinct way, but I had a general idea which went with the "Infinite Space" title. Anyway, thank you for the feedback, many have said this piece sounds like a movie soundtrack, I am currently writing a score for this movie a friend of mine made, so perhaps that is my calling.

This is the concert version of my piano trio that I wrote for a composition class in the Spring of 2010.This version sounds far better than the MIDI version that I have uploaded, so I'd like to get some comments on the piece as this is the definitive version of it as of now. Thanks for any feedback. Infinite Space (Concert Version)

This is the concert version of this solo piano piece I wrote for a composition class in 2009, I thought I would upload it separately from the MIDI version so as to get new comments as it does sound different. There are slight mistakes in this performance, but our instructor who played them had to learn so many, and it isn't a big deal. At any rate, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the piece. On a side note, perhaps it would be better if I added this alongside the MIDI file on the same page... if an Admin or someone could tell me how to do that, that would be great, but I'd like to leave it up as a new file for now... maybe adding the MIDI version later to this new upload. I'll do this for my other piece too. Peace Within the Machine (Concert Version)

It's fine, i'll just say this, so people will get it: Serge's post is after my reply to it.

I re-uploaded with a .pdf score file so everyone can see the score.

New YC Generation Questionnaire
KingCrimson replied to chopin's topic in Announcements and Technical Problems
1. Why do you visit Young Composers? To get opinions on my compositions, and just to have people hear my music. 2. What do you expect to gain from Young Composers? What is important to you... finding like minded friends, gaining knowledge, acquiring reviews of music? I like talking to other composers and see how they compose, and of course seeing what they think of my work, mainly getting reviews of my music as of now. 3. How often do you visit this site? Quite often, not every day, but several times a week. 4. How long are your visits? If they are short, why? Usually short, I check if I have any new reviews. But I am slowly getting more involved I think, I have reviewed a couple of other people's works too. 5. Do you feel the categories above are too generic and uninspiring? They seem pretty functional to me... I dunno what else you could have, a game room? Shuffle mode (in which a random piece will be played)? Anyway... :P 6. What topics for discussion would you like to see on Young Composers that we currently do not offer? I am not sure... isn't there a forum where we can just talk about anything music related? Maybe I don't get what you mean, and will edit when I do... 7. Do you feel discussion on Young Composers has been weak? If so, what can I do to improve this situation? I would like to see more reviews of pieces. :P But of course, you can't force people to, and can't make the community bigger through power of will. I don't know... I will have to look more into the discussion and interactive aspects of the site before I can answer fully. -
This is really great, I always am wanting to hear modern classical and that is exactly the kind of piece I am looking for. Beautiful and avantgarde at the same time. I love the way the oboe and violins sway up and down in pitch... gives it this spiritual, natural feel, and yet at the same time, at the beginning it was even a bit Gershwin/big city jazzy sounding, when it was just the oboe... I am finding it hard to describe what I picture with this piece. It's like some great beauty in the universe that I am having trouble connecting my mind to because of being detached from it for so long. Anyway, really amazing piece, I'm kind of more inspired to compose now.

@ SergeOfArniVillage: Yeah I guess that is cool, I did think as I was composing, that it was a very "smooth" piece. Very pleasant, perhaps my next piece will have more dissonance, but also be more upbeat and with a definitive climax. "An interesting trip", I like that, that seems about right. I don't think I intended that in particular, but the piece naturally turned out this way, and I think it fits the concept (though I came up with the concept after the piece <img src="http://network.youngcomposers.com/elgg/ipb/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif" alt=":P" />) And yes, it's implied that the astronaut does die, but he feels at one with the universe there at the end... I thought of ending it with the sad chords right before the end, which would be portraying the infinity of space in a bleak, negative light, as he flies into nothingness... but then decided to give it a more universalist, hopeful ending instead. I think it works much better. Thanks for your input.

@ jrcramer: Thanks for the response, to be honest, I wonder how the response would have changed had I not described what I pictured with the piece, and just allowed the listener to picture whatever they might. Not every part aligns exactly with my story that I came up with there... although the long violin part could be him floating in pitch blackness, losing all hope, which continues in the recap, but then the exact end is the newborn nebula etc. Interesting that you say without direction, yeah perhaps there was no definitive climax to the piece, that is something I want to work on for sure, and perhaps if I do another piece with a story to it... it will be a more full fledged concept, with each part having a specific meaning. Thanks again.

This is a piano trio I wrote. I suppose you would call this "modernism" because it is simply a modern piece, taking influence from all over (impressionism, minimalism, perhaps romanticism even). I called it "Infinite Space" just because I picture a guy flying out into space in a pod, and he's lost his course (mainly the middle and the end)... and by the end, he is running out of oxygen, and knows he is going to die, but sees a newborn nebula before him, and this gives him a sense of beauty as he goes. Anyway, let me know what you think of it, I always like to hear what influences people hear in my music, and of course how you think I might improve my works in the future. Thanks. Infinite Space Updated.

Thanks for your input, yeah I thought it was too one dimensional with just one of those "feelings", so I went for both. Most of the ideas could have used more development. I'll have my Piano Trio up soon, which I think is better in that regard.
-
Thanks, yeah one of the main criticisms I and others gave was that it could be better had it perhaps more voices and development. I think the ideas are good though, I would have fleshed them out had I more time to write the piece, but I think I'll leave it as it is because this is how it naturally turned out at the time. Thanks again.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try the pdf. tip next time, maybe I'll reupload this one like that. Yeah I actually agree a bit about it not being filled out enough, I think it might have benefited from more voices or just more rich harmony in the piano, but this is the way I turned it in so I kept it. I like the repeated 7ths though (kind of machine-like), but yeah I see what you're saying. Anyway I'll see if any other reviewers come by, thanks for your comments.

This is a piece I wrote for composition class, solo piano. I went for a bit of a jazzy, rhythmic vibe on this one. Also there is some minimalist and impressionist influence I think, but let me know what you think. What main influences are in there that you hear, and of course, what do you think of the piece in general, what improvements would you make etc. Thanks. Peace Within the Machine
