  2. Thanks for all the advice. I think I will probably just go to the church and check out the organ. Experiment with sounds and stuff. :]
  3. Heylo. I'm transcribing the Adagio from Bach's Easter Oratorio to organ from the string part. I was wondering if I need to specify anything about the stops for something like this, or if I should just let my organist handle it. Thanks. :]
  4. I play the oboe (duh), and would LOVVVEEEEE to do this. :]
  5. TANGLEWOOD TANGLEWOOD Interlochen?
  6. they all suck. Whole tone scales, FTW
  7. I'm glad this thread is prospering! :D
  8. D minor is better. :whistling: You're such an oboe-geek. Why don't you play it?
  9. THEY DON'T EXIST ahahahaha. wrong forum, btw
  10. I'm biased towards the Chopin. it's so peppy :D
  11. Here's a little article on LOL WUT before we begin: LOL WUT - Encyclopedia Dramatica Now it's up to you to suggest the most bizarre, random, stupid, and/or unexpected moment in music. Have fun :]
  12. Here are my favorites: Birds and Butterflies of Paradise Fantasia for Theremin, Oboe, String Quartet, and Piano Oboe Concerto - 3rd Movement Viola Concerto - Premiere movement Trio for Flute, Cello, and Piano Symphony No. 4 The Greek Passion What I notice most about Martinů more-so than many other composers is his original style that is detectable in ALL of his public works. It's absolutely fascinating.
  13. I think you may be more successful if you score this piece without flutes, except for the solo. A thinner orchestration if possible is usually more clean-sounding, and it might be problematic for you to balance the two flutes with the soloist. Also, the solo staff should go right above the strings.
  14. 1. What do you like? It's wide. 2. What don't you like? It's brown. 3. Would you visit more often if the design was more appealing? No. 4. Would a pleasant design affect your posting habits? No. 5. Did you think Young Composers was a bad site at first glance, as a first time visitor? No.
  15. This is a really cool piece. It reminded me of stravinsky for some reason. I loved the oboe line at the beginning. The use of the horn motif was effective, but it almost got boring. Scores should be concert pitch :)
  16. ^ if you were gay I would marry you. :P
  17. I KNEW learning German was a good idea :]
  18. I definitely heard a LOT of Debussy's first arabesque here...
  19. I liked the 7/8 section and it was pretty easy to count along with. doesn't feel challenging to me. :] The english horn solo was really lame. I will write more later when it's not 3 am :D
  20. Your bassoonists are going to murder you for using so many low Bbs. The intro could use some oboe doubling the octave up for a cool effect. If you're trying to add some space with the 7/8 bar, why not make it a 5/8? Right now it feels empty. I feel that your opening melody is too complex. Maybe you could steal something from the baroque and ornament it the second time only? An english horn always sounds fabulous in a trio like you wrote. Also, the oboe parts in general are rather low, which sounds robust, but in a march like this, that may not be the effect you're looking for. Upper ranges! I'm a bit scared for your trumpets. Repetitive and high notes - not a good combination as I'm sure you're aware. Maybe you can re-orchestrate a bit? This kind of part is much more manageable for the woodwinds. Score technicality - when you're writing the same part for transposing instruments and c instruments, you should be lining up the accidentals across the keys.
  21. Sightsinging is insanely helpful for sight-reading.
  22. That's only because people now don't recognize as much development within periods as they used to, when in reality, there should be at least four or five different subdivisions within the classical period alone.
  23. In Finale, you can simply make measures with invisible bar lines.
  24. It depends on your phrasing. I wouldn't group more than four.
