Shadow16nh Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 I'm a recent composition graduate who's moved to LA recently and I'm trying to figure out just what sort of job I should be looking for while I'm maturing and looking for opportunities to score for film. I've been told I should find work under an established composer, but I'm not sure just what that means or how to go about it? I really need some advice about this.... Quote
robinjessome Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Copyist - for established/semi-established writer Local university visual arts department - find up and coming youg filmmakers looking for music...won't pay much, but it's experience and exposure. Write lots of music...form a group...play said music...in public. Commercials - who makes them? Who does music for them? I dunno - probably some agency in LA. Get a job there - be a secretary if you have to. Make a good demo cd/dvd - send it to many, many up-and-coming people - studios, composers, orchestrators, filmmakers. Hustle for any/every opportunity you can scrounge up...offer to wash some producers Lexus if he'll let you do the music for his next Cheerio's commercial. I dunno...busting into the filmmusic scene is likely dependent 97% on luck and who-you-know. Keep at it, stay positive... Good luck... Quote
pianoman216 Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Yeah, you do need a lot of luck. But what matters is what you do with that luck when it comes (see my sig). For example, I got my first commission (which I'm still working on now) from a guy I randomly ran into at subway. I sat next to him since he was eating alone. Turns out hes a film maker (producer/director) and had his entire team together except for a composer. I let it slip that I write some music so he asked to hear some of it. I went home, jumped on my computer, wrote out a 4 minute battle score, called him up, he came by my house, picked up the CD I made, called me 30 minutes later and was like, "Dude, I just listened to it. Its freakin awesome! You got the job!". That was that and I began work. So, yes, I was VERY lucky meeting this guy at subway like that, but I also had to do a little searching. I did what I had to do and it payed off. Keep your eyes open, take ANY job that comes your way no matter how lame you think it is......at least until you get known, then you can be picky. Good luck! I also working on going into film scoring, only Im going into more arranging then composing but wherever you graduated from they should beable to help you get started by helping you find an intership which in LA although competitive there are plenty.
