piano_player18 Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Congratulations... 1st place: Untitled - Mitchell W. (Mitchell) 2nd place: Introduction and Allegro - David F. McConaughey (flint-wwrr) 3rd place - Rising from the Oblivion - Seann Branchfield (Eselbeus) I will be sending all the scores to the conductor with your e-mails and addresses. That is as far as I can go because I am leaving out of town for two years. I can't guarantee a performance for the winners, but if he likes your piece I will encourage him strongly to contact you. IF YOU HAVE NOT SUBMITTED YOUR E-MAIL, ADDRESS, OR WHATEVER ELSE YOU WANT THE CONDUCTOR TO KNOW (in order to contact you) THEN YOU NEED TO DO THAT IMMEDIATELY!!!!!! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This competition is closed. Judging is happening now. Calling All Composers!!! I and the Babahatchie Band are hosting a band composition competition. We LOVE to perform new compositions! I am VERY interested in seeing what other young composers...and old too...lol...are writing for band. There will be one winner. (Maybe more if there are several great submissions. :w00t:) The winner will be selected by myself and the conductor of the band I am in. If we do not like any of the submisisons, we have the right not to sightread or perform them. If the winner wants a recording of the reading or performance then they might have to pay a small fee to a company that I hire regularly to do recordings. (Maybe $20-50) Or I can do a cheap do-it-yourself recording. THE RULES: Updated on September 13, 2007! I HATE time limits because they limit your creativity, so it can be as short as you want it, but please do not exceed 10 minutes of music. You can write in any style. If your work is not done on finale, then you will have to mail a physical copy of the score or e-mail a pdf file PLUS a mock-up midi recording to johnprestondennis@yahoo.com With your submission I also need your physical address in that situation that I have done a considerably large amount of markings on your score that I think you could profit from viewing. Everyone that does not receive a package in the mail will receive an e-mail. Also, a notification PM will be sent if I decide to mail your score. Arrangements are allowed, but preference is given to original compositions. We prefer new works that have not been performed, but it is not a requirement. Please do not give us a grade 6 piece. 1-5 only...our members range from 14 years of age to 80. It's community band...we do this for the fun of playing! A piece with hard to read and difficult rythmns will not win. It should be something fun or beautiful. Be expressive!!! We LOVE slow as well as fast works. Concertos and solos are allowed! Multiple submissions by the same composer ARE ALLOWED!!! Here is the instrument list: Piccolo (1-however many you need) Flutes 1,2,3 (5-7 players) Clarinet in Bb 1,2,3 (6-9 players) Oboe (1) Bassoon* (0) Alto Clarinet (1) Bass Clarinet (1) Alto Saxophone 1,2 (2-3) Tenor Saxophone* (0) Baritone Saxophone (1) Trumpet in Bb 1,2,3 (6-8) Horn in F 1,2,3,4 (3-5) Trombone 1,2,3 (3-4) Baritone (T.C.)/Euphonium (1-3 total...please write two different parts because some players only read in treble and some in bass clef.) Tuba (2) Timpani Double Bass (1) Snare Drum/Bass Drum - Please write on the same staff. (2-3 percussionists total) Mallets (Marimba/bells/xylophone are the other instruments available) Cymbals (we have all kinds) / Percussion - Wind chimes, triangle, and some others...ask me and I will let you know if we have it. *This instruments may be included in your score, but we do not currently members that play those instruments. Competition starts NOW and must be turned in by e-mail or postal service by midnight on September 8, 2007! Late submissions will more than likely not be considered. ***IF YOU NEED A LITTLE EXTRA TIME JUST LET ME KNOW AND I CAN BEND THE RULES A LITTLE, BUT YOU HAVE TO LET ME KNOW. I can't give a lot of extra time but I can do a little. Good luck!!!!!!! :) Everyone that submits a score will receive comments/suggestions to improve their piece!!! That's one thing I HATE about your normal composition contests...they don't tell you what is wrong or could be improved on your score. So everyone will get something out of this. Also, every applicant will receive a free composition CD of mine by mail if they e-mail their address or P.O. Box. Winners will be asked to mail a bound conductors score and parts by postal mail. I will give sufficient time to turn these materials in, but if they are not in before the deadline, then it might not get read/sightread. P.s. - I would like a list of people who are working on band scores for this...in case you can't get it done in time I MAY let you work on it an extra day if I know you are working extremely hard to finish. THANK YOU!!!!!!! I hope I can help my fellow young composers because I know it can be hard to get live performances sometimes. (But I've got some connections!) (This competition is being sponsored by the Babahatchie Community Band in Harriman, Tennessee and John Preston Dennis, young composer.) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Judges: John Preston Dennis, composer McCall Bohanan, conductor The List and Status of the Participants: (As of 6:00am EST 9/13/07) MusicManJ4 - Submission received. tenor10 Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 i need something to write, I have a small case of writers block, so Ill take a wack at it.
piano_player18 Posted August 2, 2007 Author Posted August 2, 2007 Alright! This is great...I'm getting real excited. I wish some more people would join up!
Mitchell Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 I have my piece started, and am about a minute into it.
tenor10 Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 As much as I want to do this, I can't. I'm invovled with a show, and I have no time to really get it how I want it, so I'm sorry, good luck everyone! Please take me off the list. Sorry.
James H. Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I'm going to try my best, but I have the feeling I might not be able to write something decent in only a month, I'm soooooo slow at composing. I really want oboes. Darn. And bassoon. Double darn. QUESTIONS: What is the availability of mutes for the brass? Are cup mutes available? I would expect straight mutes are. Can all the horn players produce a good 'stopped' sound? Will the marimba player be any good? Can he/she play well with four mallets? Also, do you have a gong and vibraphone should I suddenly decide to include one? If you have a gong, what is it like? Small and wishwashy or huge and deep-dark-all-commanding-resonant-huge-"GOOOONNNNNGGG"-like? Timpanis? I love to use these, I can't see how I would do without them. If so, is a set of four available? Is piano available? I might not use it, but I'm asking just in case. Any bass trombones? Are you considering baritone and euphonium the same, or are there 1-3 expected baritone-specific players AND 1-3 expected euphonium-specific players? Oh, and FYI, piano_player, you can't have a flute choir of 5-7 people, that is WAAY too small for anything decent, I would suggest you remove that from your post(s). A good flute choir needs a piccolo, 2 soprano part (4-6 to each), an alto flute or two, a bass flute or two, and hopefully a contrabass flute. That's 14 for a small flute choir. Would you accept a submission for brass quintet?
Mitchell Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Your band's not that balanced. You really need an extra tenor sax and a few less baritone/euphonium. And you really don't need 3 flute parts. But I'm doing well with what I have.
yyoppp Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I'll join. This competition looks fun. I might do two compositions. (Also, do you have a woodblock?)
Rafn Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I'm tentative about joining this -- I'll see if I have the time.
Tumababa Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 A month isn't much time. If you gave like 6 months you'd get a lot of entries. Not criticizing. Just offering advice should you choose to do this again..... and I recommend you do... mainly 'cause I want to participate.

Would you accept a submission for brass quintet? The brass are equipt with mutes. The mallet part needs to be simple...the mallet player is a high schooler and is not advanced enough for four mallets... only two please. Think simple! No gongs or vibraphones...sorry. No piano. Please refer to the instrument list... We might have a bass trombone, but I don't think so so only plain trombone parts. About 2-3 baritone/euphoniums being the same. I will correct that to make it clear. No, we have done flute choir pieces and they have sounded great. Brass quintet...no...I had better change the rules actually...this could get complicated. Your band's not that balanced. You really need an extra tenor sax and a few less baritone/euphonium. And you really don't need 3 flute parts. But I'm doing well with what I have. No...3 flute parts are not required...that's the max. I'll join. This competition looks fun. I might do two compositions. (Also, do you have a woodblock?) Yes, I do believe we have a woodblock. A month isn't much time. If you gave like 6 months you'd get a lot of entries. Not criticizing. Just offering advice should you choose to do this again..... and I recommend you do... mainly 'cause I want to participate. Yes...I agree...I was hoping to mainly get compositions that have already been started or are in the stages of being finished. A lot of people have told me that they are just doing some editing to some older pieces and that's what I'm looking for...but yes. THANK YOU! If I do this again I PROMISE to give more notice. It's just I'm leaving town for 2-years in October and I will not be coming back during that time. Thanks!
Keerakh Kal Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 No vibes:O You're killing me, man, you're killing me... Can I assume you have at least a marimba and a xylophone? ~Kal
hare Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 This looks cool I'll give it a shot. I doubt I'll win though because my speciality is with strings and your concert band doesn't have any lol. Also my piece may be a little um.....different lol. But yeh count me in
robtheman5824 Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I will try my very best to submit something. I don't know if I'll have enough time though.
piano_player18 Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 No vibes:OYou're me, man, you're me... Can I assume you have at least a marimba and a xylophone? ~Kal Yes! We have a xylophone!
piano_player18 Posted August 8, 2007 Author Posted August 8, 2007 Hey. Do you have a glockenspiel? No.
piano_player18 Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 :sadtears:~Kal I'll check this Monday for you just to make sure. I'll PM you when I find out.
James H. Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 No, tell us here, I need one too. Badly. :ninja:
piano_player18 Posted August 16, 2007 Author Posted August 16, 2007 No, please write for Xylophone, bells, or marimba only.
James H. Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Glockenspiel is another term for orchestral bells, so yes, you do have a glockenspiel, than. By the way, you never anwered my question on the availability of timpani. Have you any? Would you accept a piece for brass choir as follows? Cornet 1, 2, 3 (or trumpets) Horn 1, 2, 3, 4 Trombone 1, 2 Bass trombone Euphonium Tuba
