I opened up a competition yesterday in the forums, but no one has posted anything yet which I find weird because I am offering a free public performance/reading of their concert band work for the winner.

I'll post the rules and everything here...please sign up for it in competitions forum!

Calling All Composers!!!

I and the Babahatchie Band are hosting a band composition competition. We LOVE to perform new compositions! I am VERY interested in seeing what other young composers...and old too...lol...are writing for band.

There will be one winner. (Maybe more if there are several great submissions. :whistling:) The winner will be selected by myself and the conductor of the band I am in. If we do not like any of the submisisons, we have the right not to sightread or perform them. If the winner wants a recording of the reading or performance then they might have to pay a small fee to a company that I hire regularly to do recordings. (Maybe $20-50) Or I can do a cheap do-it-yourself recording.

THE RULES:

  • I HATE time limits because they limit your creativity, so it can be as short as you want it, but please do not excess 10 minutes of music.
  • You can write in any style.
  • If your work is not done on finale, then you will have to mail a physical copy of the score or e-mail a pdf file PLUS a mock-up midi recording to johnprestondennis@yahoo.com
  • Arrangements are allowed, but preference is given to original compositions.
  • We prefer new works that have not been performed, but it is not a requirement.
  • Please do not give us a grade 6 piece. 1-5 only...our members range from 14 years of age to 80. It's community band...we do this for the fun of playing! A piece with hard to read and difficult rythmns will not win. It should be something fun or beautiful. Be expressive!!! We LOVE slow as well as fast works.
  • Concertos and solos are allowed!
  • Multiple submissions by the same composer ARE ALLOWED. (No more than 2 pieces per composer.)
  • You don't have to use the full symphonic forces, but it is recommended.
  • We will accept pieces for flute choir, woodwind choir, and other small ensembles that can be created based on the instrumentation list below.

Here is the instrument list:

  • Piccolo (1-however many you need)
  • Flutes 1,2,3 (5-7 players)
  • Clarinet in Bb 1,2,3 (6-9 players)
  • Oboe* (0)
  • Bassoon* (0)
  • Alto Clarinet (1)
  • Bass Clarinet (1)
  • Alto Saxophone 1,2 (2-3)
  • Tenor Saxophone* (0-1 if the player rejoins soon)
  • Baritone Saxophone (1)
  • Trumpet in Bb 1,2,3 (6-8)
  • Horn in F 1,2,3,4 (3-5)
  • Trombone 1,2,3 (3-4)
  • Baritone (T.C.) (1-3)
  • Euphonium (1-3)
  • Tuba (2)
  • Double Bass (1)
  • Snare Drum/Bass Drum - Please write on the same staff. (2-3 percussionists total)
  • Mallets (Marimba and bells are the other instruments available)
  • Cymbals (we have all kinds) / Percussion - Wind chimes, triangle, and some others...ask me and I will let you know if we have it.

*This instruments may be included in your score, but we do not currently members that play those instruments.

Competition starts NOW and must be turned in by e-mail or postal service by midnight on the last day of August 2007! Late submissions will more than likely not be considered.

Good luck!!!!!!! Everyone that submits a score will receive comments/suggestions to improve their piece!!! That's one thing I HATE about your normal composition contests...they don't tell you what is wrong or could be improved on your score. So everyone will get something out of this. Also, every applicant will receive a free composition CD of mine by mail if they e-mail their address or P.O. Box.

Winners will be asked to mail a bound conductors score and parts by postal mail. I will give sufficient time to turn these materials in, but if they are not in before the deadline, then it might not get read/sightread.

P.s. - I would like a list of people who are working on band scores for this...in case you can't get it done in time I MAY let you work on it an extra day if I know you are working extremely hard to finish.

THANK YOU!!!!!!! I hope I can help my fellow young composers because I know it can be hard to get live performances sometimes. (But I've got some connections!)

(This competition is being sponsored by the Babahatchie Community Band in Harriman, Tennessee and John Preston Dennis, young composer.)
