A mus file is the default file of Finale.

It does not only include all classic midi information (which is rather limited), but also information about:

i. staves

ii. names

iii. dynamics

iv. articulations

v. other graphic notation

vi. form of the page

vii. tempo

viii. everything included in a score.

With a mus file you can (re)create a perfect score and play it through Finale. with a midi file the score will suck, but you can still play it in winamp (for example), while mus won't play in winamp

Hope it helps
