Lord Skye Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 So I'm assembling my portfolio to show comp professors, and I need advice on just what I should put in there. It should be done before November. I don't have a ton of classical stuff unfortunately, but here are my candidates... -Choral work for men's choir -Hot jazz -Short fugue for woodwind quartet -Scherzo for chamber orchestra (unfinished) -Piece for full concert band (unfinished) -Piece for full orchestra plus other supporting instruments (unfinished) Or I could write something brand new if it's really necessary. Three scores sounds like a good number though. If I had the time, I'd put probably put those full scores and the jazz one together, but I probably can't finish them all within a month. I'll post any of these if someone wants to review, but my question focuses on what kind of stuff would go well together for this occasion. Quote
nikolas Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 First off, 3 works sound fine, unless the university has set requirements. But I remember that I sent 3 works as well for my Masters... Other than that from the ensembles and only, the things that sound interesting is the scherzo and the full orchestra plus supporting instrument. Both are rather ambitious though, and big so there are more chances of making an error. The fugue or the choral work are good candidates as well, since they are finished, and somehow the hot jazz (what is "Hot" jazz?) and the concert band, don't fit my idea of classical so... :-/ Quote
Camilla Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 When I was advised on what to show when trying for a place at University they said one of the things they like to see is interest and dedication in composition out of school requirements or things like that. So it's good if you can have works that you have written solely because of a personal interest not for an assignment or a cometition or something. I don't know if that's helpful at all but that's all I can offer! It might be good if you could post all the works so we can advise you based on the actual content not just what we assume from the titles... Good luck! Quote
Guest QcCowboy Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 you only list six pieces here... my recommendation is, simply bring all six. Show them the complete ones first, if they look like they would like to see more, then pull out the incomplete ones. However, CLEAN scores are a must. Even for the incomplete works. Quote
Lord Skye Posted October 10, 2007 Author Posted October 10, 2007 What do you mean by clean... correct in notation? Nikolas... I just used the term "hot jazz" to distinguish from laid-back improv or jazz ballad, that sort of thing. Edit: sorry it took a while to respond, if there is still want to see the scores I'll post them. Quote
Flint Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 What do you mean by clean... correct in notation?Clear notation, all dynamics, articulations, no collisions in the score... simply put, ready for publishing, even though it's not complete. Quote
Lord Skye Posted October 12, 2007 Author Posted October 12, 2007 I see; that makes sense. By the way, what break are you referring to in your signature? Quote
manossg Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 That's probably the break of the clarinet, between Bb and B. Quote
