This thread is for cello appreciation!

I LOVE, absolutely LOVE the cello :D. The low growling sounds it can make in it's lowest register are some of my favorite musical sounds (most likely because I am like that sometimes ...grunting, moody...). It's higher registers are, perhaps, weaker than a violin, but I still love the sound :D. Profess your love of cellos here! (or lack thereof....)

A lot is written already about the violoncello, let's talk about the VIOLA!

Anyway, beautiful instrument, I'm struggling to learn it! Its higher registers are absolutely splendid, in the hands of a decent player! But you gotta know how to make that A string sing.

About the repertoire...

But the cello's just awesome! I've always felt a deep resentment against the viola, though that may be because my sister plays viola and we have a sort of rival set up between the two of us...

Generally I seem to love any cello concerto I listen to, whereas other instruments I am slightly more picky on...

Resentment against the viola? Man, as I grow older, my fascination towards this instrument only grows. Its timbre just speaks through the heart!

On the violoncello repertoire, how could I forget 'le cygne'???

Also, let us not forget that the violoncello is left fatherless, since a few months ago, mr. Rostropovich passed away...who's to be the next king??? Probably nobody!

I have found that the viola is essential to ensemble and orchestral works but does't have too much to offer as a solo instrument that the 'cello or violin can't...

And the high registers of a cello aren't weaker than the violin's at all.

I love the cello because I was learning it at the same time I was learning how to read and write, so it's become an essential ability in my iife.

Elgar's Concerto sucks compared to Schumann's and Dvorak's.

I discovered this awesome cross-string bowing thing that I'm using in a piece I'm writing.

The cellist touches the 5th-interval node on one string, while playing a stopped octave on the next-highest string. This gives two of the same pitch - but one is a stopped pitch and one is a harmonic. The pairs of notes are then bowed together, one after the other.

C string is sexy? It's like Australia and the reproductive organs of elderly women - everybody knows it's down there, but nobody cares (sorry for the bad joke). :P

Dvorak...nice! Schumann ...

*stops wondering whether those two are legal to post and indulges in the music* :whistling:

What about Yo-yo Ma? I love his interpretation of the prelude of Bach's cello suite no. 1. I also have some of his recordings. :)

I think the faces he makes while playing (although his sound is pure velvet) rule him out as the next cello king. On top of that, he isn't russian and he has appeared in the muppet show!

May I recommend his interpretation of the Elgar concerto, his work with mr. McFerrin and his Piazzolla stuff...perfection! Some of that might be floating inside the (you)tube!

Yeah he always does that. And his interpretation of Piazolla rocks.

I have several recordings of the prelude from bach's first cello concerto, but this is my favourite:

You're kidding, right? The Schumann concerto is perhaps one of the more complex works for cello (particularly when compared to Elgar's concerto ).
