robinjessome Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I tend to view "snobbism" in the opposite direction: someone DISliking something based on an uneducated parrotting of someone else's opinion. Exactly. Ignorance (aka fear) of the unknown and misunderstood. With education and knowledge comes the ability to open your minds and accept the existence and validity of other styles/art forms/genres...Whether you like them or not is moot. :whistling: Quote
Tumababa Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 However, it seemed to me that you were suggesting that DJ music (which takes less time to ...make) is equally as worthwhile as classical music. The way you mentioned the time in relation to this made me think you were talking about the one type of music compared with the other - rather than just the time itself. Anyway, it's pretty obvious I have a low opinion of DJs and dance music, so I should shush. :innocent: Hmm.... I tried my hand at DJing for the first time the other day. Just spinning a couple of records... I managed to tempo match a swampy Tom Waits number with a good hip hop beat. Pretty fun. I don't think dismissing DJing as an artform is sound judgment. Unless of course you're talking about people who just spin dance tracks. In that case I agree with you. There's very little creativity there. We should be making a distinction between DJs and Turn-tablists. A Turn-Tablist is able to make music on the fly with his records, his laptop, and whatever gear he has at his disposal. He is a one man band. What he does is half improvised and half composed. A DJ is someone who spins records at a party and plays party songs. They are basically a cd player with a human element. They could be replaced with an ipod and a decent playlist. Quote

Kid Koala...spectacular. Canadian, and sans monitors/headphones. Quote
Euler Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I tend to view "snobbism" in the opposite direction: someone DISliking something based on an uneducated parrotting of someone else's opinion. Well, I think we agree - it was the "uneducated parroting" either to like or dislike that is the crux of snobbism. I suppose the snobs that dislike get more attention and the others are more "closet snobs". Quote
Tumababa Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 That Koala vid is incredible. Good find. Quote
Will Kirk Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 As far as snobbery goes I think anyone that shows malcontent or even hatred towards a particular style of music, is mostly just an inexpierenced or scared individual And somehow I got the feeling that GMS wanted to say that we're snobs at the start of the discussion, however I don't think that's true :P Quote

Flint Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 "hate" is used in English to represent too many conceptions of the base word "dislike". English isn't very good at expressing shades of meaning. It's like the word "love" - the word has too many connotations to pin down, unlike Greek, for instance. Greek is wonderfully precise in that instance. Quote
spherenine Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 So because I hate The Crazy Frog and Fergie I am inexperienced or scared?? :O I don't know The Crazy Frog, but Fergie kicks donkey. Quote
Rkmajora Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 cookie monster? you don't have to be a snob to make good music, but most people chose to since it helps a lot to distinguish themselves. Quote
spherenine Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Don't even get me started on how much I hate the fact that the cookie monster is on a diet. Quote

Mike Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I think he's just referring to the fact that Greek has more than one word for "love" (i.e. it distinguishes between platonic love, romantic love etc.). That's pretty common knowledge, I think...unless I'm wrong. :P Quote

Honestly... love = αγάπη (ayapi) It is the love of a lover, of a brother, of a sister, of a parent etc... For platonic love we add the word... platonic = πλατονικός (platonikos) BTW, Platon was gay as every gay today, ok? Just for the record... ;) Quote
montpellier Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 huh, I picked up a few phrases that deal with the more carnal aspects...best way to learn to speak a new language. You need to know how to ask what's important. :D If your phrase book translates: qa se g*m*ss* s’ena lepto, as “Please show me the way to the Post Office', buy a different phrase book. Ela mazimou, agapimou Quote
manossg Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 And love = έρως, with the meaning of sexual attraction... Quote
Wagner Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Everyone will have their opinion, however snobby. And people will point out their "snobbery" which is fine... Because, it is all subjective. People might declare a Schubert waltz to be superior to White Stripes, but there is no objective ground as to what makes it better. The harmony is all thanks to the universe and not the composer, and to insult it is not insulting the composer but insulting the universe. Quote
Will Kirk Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 So because I hate The Crazy Frog and Fergie I am inexperienced or scared?? :O Hardly, I'm just saying people that are like "All *insert hated style of music* Sucks!" those kind of people are whom I was talking about Quote
robinjessome Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 ...The harmony is all thanks to the universe and not the composer, and to insult it is not insulting the composer but insulting the universe. What? Quote
Dirk Gently Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Bah, the universe deserves to be insulted...damn you universe! Oh, and you suck, too... Quote
Rkmajora Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Wagner, you have too much of truth. I hope one day I can strongly disagree with you. Ha ha, I like the "somewhat hungry musician" title. It made me really think at first. And I think you seriously need to change your signature from "Good is a point of view," to "My point of view is good." Ha ha ha... Quote
Will Kirk Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 The harmony is all thanks to the universe and not the composer, and to insult it is not insulting the composer but insulting the universe. Ah but someone had to write it no? I have no idea what point you're trying to make, I don't think the universe has feelings so we can't possibly insult it and expect any reaction Quote
Ljoekelsoey Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 hmm that is one seriously bizzare comment by Wagner there... Quote
