Nyu001 Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 How much do I need to know for do a bachelor of Music Composition before start or apply? I mean what things I need to know or should I know before attempt to a bachelor of Music composition? I wish to know and what precisely they teach you? and thx for any comments that you can bring to me. Quote
nikolas Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Hem... It largely depends on where you wish to apply really. Both on the requirements of entry AND what they teach... I would imagine that in most unis they want you to know music. To know theory, probably some harmony as well and have a... tendency to write music. But I have really no idea what to say. Quote
Nyu001 Posted November 23, 2007 Author Posted November 23, 2007 Haha ok thank you so much anyway! I wanted to know how advanced the person need to be for apply to one, thx. :) Quote
Guest QcCowboy Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I can give you more or less the requirements for two universities where I had applied for my bachelors (way back when). One required: - a portfolio of compositions, preferably varied (chamber, instrumental, orchestral) - knowledge of harmony (college harmony, 4-part realization, basic tonal analysis) - rudimentary counterpoint (2-part) - history (general knowledge - ie: Bach was a baroque/romantic/contemporary composer) The other university required: - do you breathe? - have a pulse? - regularly ingest some sort of food and liquid? - have money to pay tuition? So, as you can see, institutions can have VERY wide-ranging differences in their entrance requirements. The best advice I can give you is don't try to enter university with the minimum necessary requirements. The more you know going in, the easier time you will have and the more you will actually learn while there. Quote
robinjessome Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 A good thing to do would be to focus on schools you plan on applying to, and get in touch with the faculty and registrars office and see exactly what they want. Contacting the profs will get you a lot of insight into what they're looking for...which will likely vary significantly from other institutions... Quote
Nyu001 Posted November 23, 2007 Author Posted November 23, 2007 Thx for the comment : ) When is about the portfolio does need to be Recorded in live the pieces or can be just me playing them recorded in a instrument and others made from a PC using softwares? I ask because I don't get too much chances to contact with other that can perform my own works. Quote

Be it a live recording, or rendered from computer samples or whatever. The profs should realize that most young writers don't have performers at their disposal, and will hopefully take that into consideration. Quote
benxiwf Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 many universities spend the first year allowing comp majors to take standard theory classes and learn the fundamentals before composition is actually the focus and many require that you still audition on an instrument Quote
Nyu001 Posted November 23, 2007 Author Posted November 23, 2007 Thx, I am 18 years old going to 19 years old in some days and I am in a college already studying graphic design but for a future I would like to study composition too, I am in a conservatory of music already but Just take my Piano and violin classes there, I took theory class there but I left because was too slow (Big group, and years ago was that) and all I know till now is what I have learn alone reading, exploring and analyzing. In my personal opinion for me I learn a lot of the basic and not sure if intermediate things that's why I want to know as I said before what should I know and how advance the person need to be. Quote
