Mark Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 An ensemble I've become extremely interested in recently, as well as other chamber brass ensembles. Can anyone suggest me any contemporary music for Brass Quintet, actually written for it, as a lot of the music I can find on the Tube for example is arrangements. One example of some beautiful music for this ensemble: All suggestions welcome and appreciated  Quote
James H. Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Sorry, can't give any examples of brass quintet-specific music, but I know a few good arrangements. Seen the videos on German Brass? I don't think they're a quintet, but they are definitely a chamber brass ensemble, very cool. A few videos featuring them: YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. Very cool rendition of that Bach Badinerie. YouTube - German Brass - Badinerie And since my post so far hasn't technically had anything to do with brass quintet, here's a little find of mine, some random quintet playing The Junk Man Rag by Joplin. This is pretty good, I can hear virtuosity in every member! Enjoy... I have to say, brass is my favourite family by far. I like woodwinds a lot too, and strings I'm least fond of, percussion being just ahead of them in my opinion. But I play now trumpet, horn, and tuba and have played each in concert by now.... brass is just so neat, can't really describe it. I love how any brass instrument has the most beautiful pianissimo, and such a boisterous fortissimo, I just love that loud brassy sound, brings chills. And plus, they're just so shiny.... EDIT: I just remembered... I began writing a happy little brass quintet piece a good while ago, didn't get to far, 'cause I don't know where to go next, I've been giving it a break so I can come back to it later with a fresh mind. I could post it if you're interested, but only if so, as it's very short, like two or three phrases. Maybe I'll go see if I can do anything with it now that I'm thinking about it. Alas, I'm bored. :( :w00t: Quote
Chaski Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 One example of some beautiful music for this ensemble: Love it! The CD's on its way!:w00t: Quote
Mark Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 James: I've check out quite a lot of German Brass's stuff, and very much enjoyed their renditions of various Bach pieces, and a fair bit of other Baroque music it would seem. Absolutely loved that Joplin one, I always enjoy Joplin, and it sounded the Teesch for Brass Quintet :D I would be very interested in hearing anything you've written for BQ, as I always enjoy your music. If you post anything PM me and I'll gladly check it out ;) Chaski: Glad you like it, and likewise ;) Quote
Chaski Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Chaski: Glad you like it, and likewise ;) Call me Ed :P And the piece on the YouTube link, was written by a composer called Michael Kamen, and it was his last composition before he sadly died. I don't think he could have ended on a better note :) Quote
Mark Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 Yeah, I'd read about that, and I intend on ordering the score for analysis  Quote
Chaski Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Good idea! Maybe you could try orchestrating it :P I've listened to this piece/watched the video well over 50 time's already today. The melody is just...inspiring, and the way the instruments, and the players work with each other is just amazing Quote
Mark Posted December 8, 2007 Author Posted December 8, 2007 Yeah, try getting that kind of huge sound with 5 string players :P Quote
Chaski Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Haha, it's worth a try! To get that piece to just completley fill a hall/room would be great! :P Quote
James H. Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Yeah, plus you remember that brass instruments are so pretty at the softer dynamics too..... really inspirational instruments... such a ..... perfect sound. Quote
helgarr Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 I must say I quite enjoy the Austrian band Mnozil Brass. Especially this particular piece (YouTube). Quote
Mark Posted December 9, 2007 Author Posted December 9, 2007 I've seen this lot's Bohemian Rhapsody, and I enjoyed this one just as much, I love their approach. The tap bit in the middle was awesome  Quote
helgarr Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 Their approach is so groovy and fun, but still quite insane. That trombone melody in the beginning seems extremely complex to perform. Also always fun to hear Mario Bros tunes performed by brass groups. Quote
Mark Posted December 10, 2007 Author Posted December 10, 2007 Any performences in particular you can recommend? Quote
Nigel Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 Awesome music and awesome playing. The first video gave me goosebumps. Makes me wish I could play a brass instrument. Quote
Chaski Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 My Canadian Brass: Magic Horn CD just arrived! Love it! Every track is amazing, the sound they get together is beautiful... Quote
Mark Posted December 16, 2007 Author Posted December 16, 2007 I asked my brass teacher about Brass Quintets, and any recommendations, and he said to check out "Victor Ewald". Some very cool stuff on the tube: YouTube - Ewald - III Allegro Moderato Enjoy ;) Quote
Chaski Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Ah nice, a more classical style than other quintets I've heard. I like it... Quote
