Sorry, not really a technical problem, just something that's been bugging me...

Why, when you click on "view new posts" does it not show posts I've recently viewed or replied to?

I know technically they're not new to me anymore, but I do like to flick back to threads I've visted before or threads I've posted on before even if there are no new posts there just so I can reread something or edit a post I've just written.

I've never seen a forum that does this before and I've posted on many. It's a strange quirk unique to YC. :P

Is there a way of changing this in my CP? If not, would you consider changing the settings globally - that is of course if most people think it's a good idea, if people like it like it is I'll just have to put up and shut up.

I know it's possible as this forum (Soundsonline-Forums - Your favorite place for premium support of EastWest distributed products) which I'm a member of uses the same software as you and they show new posts regardless of whether you've seen them before.

Thanks!

Rob

Yeah, thats a point...

I've not really noticed that, but it would be useful to have that feature I think, or maybe another link next to those three [View New Posts | Member Map | Library] to have maybe a Recently Viewed link as well, to say, the last 10/20 threads.

Just an idea, lets see what other people think...

We use a slightly different method to the default when it comes to tracking unread posts. (I should mention at this point that the method is not a per-user setting)

Normally, View New Posts displays all threads with new posts since your last visit. Threads you have actually read will be included in the list, but without the unread icon. When you mark all threads as read, your last visit is updated to the present moment, so everything disappears from the list. However, if you happen to be inactive for 30 minutes or more, your "last visit" value may change when you next visit the board. Thus, all threads/forums would then be considered "read", even if you hadn't read them.

In other words, it's possible you might miss some unread posts. :P

Our method currently in use allows you to keep unread posts stored up indefinitely, but will never show you posts which you have read. Overall, this is a much more reliable arrangement. It took me a little while to adjust as well, but I think it's worth the small sacrifice of not being able to handily revisit a thread you've just replied to.

Hope the above is clear - thought I'd lay it all out since this issue has been raised before. :)

Yes, I see what you're saying.

I've also noticed, that when you click on User CP at the top, it shows you recently subscribed threads. I have set my settings to subscribe me to the threads that I post in, so if I want to re-visit a thread, or edit my post, I can check my subscriptions.

You can change this setting in the Profile Options I think.

Thanks Mike. I'll see if I get used to it. I'm so used to the default system I'm not sure I'll ever completely get used to this. Oh well, it's only a small niggle.

For the sake of convenience, there are now two items on the Quick Links menu under Useful name "My Posts" and "My Threads". These provide a quick route to viewing your latest posts and threads.

Quick Links > Today's posts

That seems to do what I want view new posts to do, so I'll stick to that from now on.
