pricewalden Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 The challenge is: To write a chamber piece (string quartet, woodwind quintet, etc.) that reflects the feelings and thoughts felt at New Year's. There is no time limit on the piece. Entries must be posted in this thread by January 1st. The judges are: Mahlon, IHoldthePenHaha (head judge), and sirgregsalot. The judges must review each composition and score it on a scale from 1 to 10. The judges will PM the head judge (IHoldThePenHaha) their scores. Then the head judge will tally the scores and announce the winner in this forum! Happy Writing!
Dirk Gently Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 ....11 days? for an orchestral piece? You realize that's either an extremely short piece, or a longer unfinished one......and that most of the composers here either not capable of writing much more than that or can write that fast/well, but are simply not interested in doing that much work during the holidays. I think if new year's is the deadline, at least make it a chamber piece....that way it could be fun and more people would be interested.
pricewalden Posted December 21, 2007 Author Posted December 21, 2007 that was a good suggestion. a chamber piece it is.
Alan Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Alright, let's get rolling!! (Obviously, it will be some time before pieces get up here) Everyone good luck, and I will be happy to review the pieces that come in! Alan, your judge So be niiice!
Saiming Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Good idea, although not many will enter because of the short notice.
Alan Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Three days left! Should entries be PMed to me, or should they be posted and up the pressure??
James H. Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 I just noticed this today, so I probably can't do anything. Umm.... push the deadline back maybe? I don't think very many people will get anything in if anyone at all.
Alan Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 so is it one entry per person? One entry per person. Enigmus- You're right. I just realized how few people would enter... Is it OK to push the deadline to January 5? I'll PM Pricewalden.
Dev Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Question B: Does the piece have to be...possible
Alan Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Question B: Does the piece have to be...possible By professionals. Better post it and let the judges see... :O
Saiming Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Question B: Does the piece have to be...possible That was by far the [censure] question I ever encountered. Of course, shouldn't that be the aim for each composition? That it get's played?
Dev Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 That was by far the [censure] question I ever encountered.Of course, shouldn't that be the aim for each composition? That it get's played? Not necissarily, for instance, techno... I'm just saying, I could make it a lot better if I were allowed to write four simultaneous notes for the first violin.
James H. Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Well, if for a violin section, then fine, they can divide the upper and lower parts between inside and outside players. Otherwise, it's be a quadruple stop... the lower two are played, then the upper two are sustained for the length of the note. *Goes off to begin working on a piece for three 'celli and two bassi.*
tenor10 Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 A string sextet is acceptable right? I mean, thats chamber.
James H. Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Ha ha ha! Not necessarily! I was being very general. :P
Alan Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Since Pricewalden hasn't answered my PM, I will extend the deadline to Jan. 5th. PLEASE get them in! If I only get one entry, I will declare them the winner!! Please make sure to PM the scores to our judges!! (Mahlon, IHoldthePenHaha, sirgregsalot)
James H. Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 I started yesterday and I'm already half done... I'll get it in by the 5th for sure.
Alan Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 A string sextet is acceptable right?I mean, thats chamber. Oops! I missed this comment completely! Sorry! Number one- What would you write for a sextet that you can't write for a quintet? Number two- Yes, I would keep the limit to eight instruments, so no more than eight, and preferably not eight. Yes, I have taken over this thread as the judge since none of the others as well as Pricewalden are posting... :O :D
Alan Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Three days left! On one note- I will be judging the pieces based on five parameters- 1) Melodic intrest- Can you convey a melody in a way to let me understand it completely? 2) Harmonic intrest- How intresting are your chords? Fillers? Other noodling that adds to the piece? 3) Progression- how do you take me (the listener) places, and can you keep my intrest? 4) Instrumentation- How do you make use of the instruments that you have chosen? How widely do you use special techniques to keep me intrested. 5) How well does it match the theme (New Years)? If the other judges are still alive, I advise that you use this system too, so that we are on the same page. If the other judges are here, please leave a comment...? :glare:
Alan Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 One day left! Since the other judges haven't responded, I am taking full responsibility to do judging. I hate relying on other people that you can't rely on :glare: Anyway, I need entries VIA PM by TOMORROW!!
James H. Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 What hour? By 23:59 Saturday? I'm 'a workin' on it 'ere...
Dirk Gently Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 yes, could we have it done by the end of the day tomorrow?
