lol don't worry :P

Oh noes... maniac laugh (your avatar picture) :horrified:

Yay, this sounds fun. I guess I'll take part as well!

Am very busy this month so not 100% certain I'll hit the deadline but I'd like to try so add me to the list!

Count me in. I'm not totally sure I can get something done in time but I will try.

Possible to make the pieces anonymous somehow? Maybe send them all to one person, then that one person distributes them to all the judges and the judges report their scores back to that one person who then tallies the scores?

Of course, then everybody would have to make sure they're name isn't on the score anywhere...

I always have mine at least twice, I'm afraid of music stealers... :musicwhistle:

at least twice,

:ninja: I will steal your music :O

But good idea to make it anonymous though!

I like that system.....just don't have any name on the score (easy enough to do in Finale, for sure, and other notation programs, I'm assuming), and send all the files to one person, who will reveal the identities at the end of the judging. This ensures any favoritism is absent and it's the music alone that is judged. I'm not saying there would be any favoritism, but I'd say it's better to be safe than sorry ;).

damn good idea. The person we send it to will have to know whose is whose though won't they? Otherwise how can he reveal the winner at the end? How do we get round that?

Edit: Am I asking too many questions? XD

Just have someone not in the contest do it, who's a relatively frequent member and is trustworthy and all that.

Any volunteers?

It could work like this: each participant sends their entry to the foreman, who would then obviously know whose are whose, and he can post all their entries in anonymity. The judges then send their scores to the foreman, who tallies, and announces the winner. Maybe we could also have a public poll, where any and all YC members can vote and the winner of the poll will have a couple bonus points added to his/her total (nothing big, of course), since there are only a handful of judges and such represent the views and opinions of only those few people. That last one is just a random idea I had. ;)

^I like that idea. Could the poll be abused by participants though?

Yes, but we could simply ask the participants to not to vote for themselves and trust them. We have (for the most part) quite mature people on these forums.

Just to clarify more: Even though a string orchestra usually only uses 5 staves, it can contain around 30-60 players. Is this ok, or do you mean really chamber chamber?

I will enter, although I have to write an opera this month so I'm not 100% sure I'll have anything for you in the end! Is this ok?

I don't mind 50 instruments, but make SURE you know how to orchestrate it properly, or you will be graded off.

May I ask how you have decided the judging will be done?

Yes:

It will be out of 100 points:

1. Formatting (Like, proper scoring, neatness etc. UNmessy scores) - 20 Points.

2. Theme (is it strong, does it say, "I am a THEME!") - 20 Points.

3. Variations (Are there at least 4? Are they of good length, do they actually VARY on the theme?) - 40 Points (ten per variation).

4. Report on Variations (See instructions...) - 20 Points.

Can I be a judge? I have loads of work to do right now so I don't have time to spend to write the piece, but I'd love to see what other people have written and give feedback. So? :P

Yup.

Why not! Who wants to the middle man? First com, first serve!

or we can ask for all of the participants to vote for their piece - that would be equally effective and more trustworthy, as one will be forced to vote for their piece (as opposed to hoping they won't vote for their own piece).

Or how about the participants don't vote at all :P....I'm pretty sure there's a way of seeing who voted...

yes, but what if one participant votes, even accidentally? We'll either have to remove a vote from that selection, or the other participants would have to vote as well, whereas if everyone voted for their piece, all entries would automatically get +1, so the differences between the entries would be equal, and I don't think anyone would vote for a piece other than theirs, unless they don't want their piece to be in an equal state with the other pieces.

But if you are allowed to vote, but not on your piece. How about that?

But what if you (honestly) thought yours was the best :P.

nah, I actually think that's a pretty good idea....everyone votes on which piece they like best, besides their own....and whoever wins gets a couple more points in the judging thing. Nothing too big, but enough so that it factors in the decision of the people. Though, truthfully, I think we could avoid any confusion and stuff if we just didn't have the participants vote (because what composition contest does that, anyway :P? None that I've heard of...)

That's all too complicated. It's going to be fair as long as noone makes new screennames to vote on their piece. But this is pretty obvious to anyone looking at who voted - someone who just joined and has no posts is obviously a fake. It's then up to the moderators to check IP addresses to see who they need to disqualify. I've ran many competitions in the past, and just letting anyone vote, including the participants voting for themselves (which is 100% fair), is fine enough and not complicated at all.

As for anonymity, it really ends up not being as big a deal as you think. Besides, even if some people here are more known than others, people who sign up as judges usually know to be fair and honest anyway. But it's not a big deal.

A point system, with a number correlating to how many public votes a piece got, added to how many points a piece got from the judges, would be good.

[*]Any participant in the competition can vote' date=' but not for their own pieces. However, in an effort to encourage voting among participants, any participant who votes will have 2 points added to their voting score.[/list']

I like just letting participants vote like anyone else - if they like their piece the best, they vote on it. Most of the contestants will do just that, leveling the playing field and not affecting the results as much. No problem.

hehe. Nice one. Dave got so *wned!!!
