amadeus2726686 Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 What's a piece of music you like -- any genre -- but are embarrassed to admit to liking? I guess mine would have to be Gimme More.:O Quote
Gardener Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I've always been a bit embarrassed of loving Vivaldi so much. His music is so often regarded as "easy listening baroque", and maybe it is, but I can't help loving it. Quote
Will Kirk Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 If you're embarrassed to admit you like it... why would you say you like it here? Wouldn't that just embarrass you further? Quote
amadeus2726686 Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 Yes, but we're among friends...or at least compatriots. And besides, you could always say you listen to said piece "to research for your next composition." Anything for the sake of art.:P Quote
Guest QcCowboy Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I like a lot of things that others might sneer at, but I'll be quick to set them in their place at the first sign of that sneer! I dare anyone. T.a.T.u. happen to have a number of songs I really REALLY like. Quote
robinjessome Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I'm not embarrassed about anything I like....some things may be more of a guilty pleasure, but to any hardcore jazz-snob I'll own up to anything I like...I'll happily admit that I really dig Chuck Mangione: Chuck Mangione - Feels So Good Quote
ThePianoMan121 Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 There's nothing that I listen to that I'm ashamed of listening too. If it's good, it's good. Quote
Mike Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I love Rammstein's Du Hast...the electronica intro and main guitar riff, at least. Not as big a fan of the vocals. :musicwhistle: Quote
Guest QcCowboy Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I gots a REALLY big weakspot for Metalica's Enter Sandman... I don't know, it just sounds... "sexy". Quote
Mike Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Oh, Enter Sandman is amazing. I'm definitely not ashamed of liking that one. :D Quote
Daniel Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I hate Enter Sandman, but occasionally do like some rock music. Muse have some good songs, and Iron Maiden have some good songs... but I can only take a certain amount at once. And Queen are pretty musical and enjoyable. Quote
The_Emperor Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I like Metallica(the old stuff, cliche i know but..), but Enter Sandman it too overplayed, i can't hear that any of that. I'm not ashamed of anything i like cuz i like it for a reason. I listen to all kinds of stuff, metal, classical, jazz, rock, electronica...etc i just select what sounds good to me. Quote
PsychWardMike Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I generally don't have a problem liking music. Some of my composer friends think that they need to have perfect taste that no one can find fault with, but I think as a composer, you have the right to not only listen to everything you want, but you should listen to all the music you can, no matter what genre. Then, if anyone gets on you for listening to music they don't like you get to whip out the "I'm a composer card" which generally stops the jeering and sneering. So I'll just say it. I like Disney Soundtracks. And even though I'm a huge David Bowie fan, I like Elton John. Yes David Bowie is a more brilliant artist, but sometimes I just want to listen to "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." Quote

Muse have some good songs, and Iron Maiden have some good songs... but I can only take a certain amount at once. And Queen are pretty musical and enjoyable. UP THE IRONS! *returns to normal mode* I'm definitely not ashamed of liking Maiden, being one of 10,000 people singing along to Fear of the Dark was almost certainly one of the most exciting musical moments of my life :D Quote
christianc Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Lion king soundtrack! I'm not ashamed of loving it, but I guess some people might find this embarrassing :P Quote
rob1984 Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Lion king soundtrack!I'm not ashamed of loving it, but I guess some people might find this embarrassing :P Lion King was the last great Disney film, and one I'm still happy to watch. Quote
Mahlon Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 wow that chuck mangione guy is great, never heard him before :), I've never really thought about being embarassed because of music.. hrmm.. i like jonny cash... and i think the original micheal jackson stuff is cool like thriller and stuff, although i don't listen to it that much. I also like Frank Sinatra awesome YouTube - Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues live at San Quentin prison Quote
Marius Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Hah, this'll be a fun thread. I have to say that I don't really feel embarrassed about liking any music, but I'll contribute here on the grounds that some people may consider that I SHOULD. First up is one of my absolute favourite soundtracks, and it's from Muppet's Treasure Island. Besides the fact that it's all rousing piratey fare from the best days of Hans Zimmer, it also includes some really really cute songs, also by him. I should mention that I don't actually like the movie, just the music. Thanks to the wondrous wealth of material that is YouTube, I can share my favourite actual sung songs from the soundtrack. Unfortunately, the actual score bits are not available, which is a pity because they're quite good. Anyhow, enjoy: Shiver my Timbers Professional Pirate For those of you who'll recognize it, the Boom Shakalaka song was also from this soundtrack, although apparently there isn't a scene from the movie with it on YouTube. Ah well. :) Quote
Mike Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I like Michael Jackson as well, particularly Thriller. What's interesting is how harmonically colourful a lot of his songs are - many of them throw in elements of funk for extra zest. I do experience something of a mental block when I listen to him now, though, given the various "extra-curricular activities" he appears likely to have participated in since the bulk of his notable material was recorded. And Marius, you're a brave man. :P Quote
robinjessome Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 i like jonny cash... micheal jackson stuff ... I also like Frank Sinatra. You're embarrassed to like Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra??! Three of the greatest and most influential artists of all-time? Quote
Mahlon Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 hah well.. ok i dunno, i guess cuz theyre in the Popular genre.. im not really i was just trying to think of something lol.. im actually proud that i like their music Quote
Guest thatguy Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 i like the mortal kombat theme for the first 15 sec, after that i wanna break my cd player...its just so damn catchy Quote
red82991 Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 When I first began to like musical theater, classical and later opera, at first I was embarrassed because it was out of the norm for a young teenage, maybe thirteen or fourteen years old to like that sort of thing. It's still unusual now that I'm sixteen but I've learned to overcome it and though I used to pause my music when others came close, I now proudly listen to the greatest music ever written, (and have been known to play it a little louder than I should in hopes that others might hear it as well) Quote
